M@tt 77 Posted June 11, 2008 (edited) I'm in the process of dropping my GTI6 engine into my 205 and after removing the old Mi16 last night i removed the gearbox tonight with the intention of swapping the clutch over onto the GTI6 as i'll be using my Mi16 gearbox. However when i removed the box i found the clutch thrust plate in this state Think i caught it just in time as there doesn't look like alot of meat left on them spring faces the clutch was brand new when i fitted it and the cars covered less than 11k! It was a Sachs one from Euro Car Parts and i think it cost me about £80!! Edited June 11, 2008 by M@tt

Paintguy 0 Posted June 11, 2008 Nice! Been resting your foot on the clutch pedal?
welshpug 1,657 Posted June 11, 2008 crikey!! I've seen bearings literally explode before any wear that advanced occured!
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted June 11, 2008 Nice, Looks like there was no end float on the cable to do that so quick
M@tt 77 Posted June 12, 2008 (edited) does that mean the cable was probably done up too tight ie the bearing pressing on the thrust face constantly? i take the the cable should be tightened just enough that any play in the lever arm is removed Edited June 12, 2008 by M@tt
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted June 12, 2008 Noo, You need a few mm free play in the cable, basically I have it so the clutch pedal is level with the brake pedal which normally gives around 5mm of free play when you pull the arm towards the rad on the box
M@tt 77 Posted June 12, 2008 (edited) right, cheers miles think the cable's probably been wrongly set in that case then (that'll be me then) Edited June 12, 2008 by M@tt
Foltan 0 Posted June 12, 2008 wooaah! it even took me a good couple of minutes to work out what was happening there! haven't seen alot of clutches before
AdamP 0 Posted June 12, 2008 If the thrust bearing is doing it's job then there shouldn't be rubbing between the spring plate and the bearing, as the bearing will spin at the same speed as the plate! That looks to me like the thrust bearing has seized solid.
M@tt 77 Posted June 12, 2008 (edited) bearing still spins i was looking at it just now before i threw it in the bin, weird :S Edited June 12, 2008 by M@tt
allanallen 528 2 Cars Posted June 12, 2008 bearing still spins i was looking at it just now before i threw it in the bin, weird :S alright matt, that 106 xsi we had did exactly the same as that, release bearing was fine and it drove fine, no noise/ cable wasn't to tight or owt. I'm also fitting a clutch on a mates 206 diesel at the min and thats done it aswell but the release bearing had eaten the slide it sits on and the arm, it still span though. god knows
M@tt 77 Posted June 13, 2008 (edited) new clutch sorted courtesy of Paintguy so GTI 6 project rolls on Edited June 13, 2008 by M@tt
tagy 1 Posted July 5, 2008 Half way through changing my clutch, and it looks pretty similar:
RossD 44 Posted July 18, 2008 It might be that the release bearing will spin by hand, but I bet it siezes or gets stiff when its under pressure (Like when its forced onto the clutch by the release arm) and causes that damage.
ablister 31 Posted July 18, 2008 If the thrust bearing is doing it's job then there shouldn't be rubbing between the spring plate and the bearing, as the bearing will spin at the same speed as the plate! That looks to me like the thrust bearing has seized solid. that is caused by incorrect adjustment of clutch pedal or resting his foot against pedal when driving. If the release bearing was seized solid then the noise would be terrible and changing gears would be an effort and if he didn't notice the noise then the pressure plate fingers would just fall off after about 10 miles!
