Annoying Noise After 60 Mph

Recommended Posts

dazEmad

Im after any suggestions for a horrible noise i get from the back wheel. It has been like this for about a year if i drive around under 60/70 there is never a noise but when it is pushed past 60/70 mph the noise is there and it can then only goes away unless going under 30/40 mph. Im Certain it is Wheel Bearing related and a lack of grease, getting hot/friction causing this. The Noise is like when you use to slow your bmx down using your foot as a brake on the back wheel but with a bit higher pitched humming

Jack the front/rear end and try to spin each tyre with your hands , if it's worn bearing you'll be able to hear grumbling sound as the wheel spins , also try to rock each wheel if you fell any free play it could be wheel bearing or worn/loosen suspension components , joint bolts etc.

Apart form this , if the sound comes from the rear end , it could be rear wheel catching the inner arch at certain speeds so check if the both rear wheels are in center , if not it'll be beam bearings ..

Rgs ! :)

Seeing as its been like it a year would it not be wise to get the car in the air and investigate what it is?

Sounds like a wheel bearing, these can be noisy but not necessarily have any play in them.

If a wheel bearing gets noisy it means its on its way out.

It could take a year and then slowly get worse and worse. It could be a week and then it lets go of your wheel at speed!

Wheel bearings are so cheap and not worth the hassle or risk, if it sounds like it could be a wheel bearing then change it and see if it goes away!
