gerlewislewis 0 Posted June 11, 2008 Hi guys I have been given an new ecu temp sender to try as my current one may be causing the cold start problems. The only problem is removing the old one... The new one is blue and has a hex-nut on it for fitting/removal. BUT, my current one, seems to have no nut for removal, and it is also black (not blue). It seems fixed onto the metal part which has 2 hoses running in and out of it (thermostat housing?) Any ideas if there are 2 different types, and maybe I need a whole new housing, or if Im looking at the wrong bit? I have attached a pic, its hard to see, but Ive circled the bit I assume to be the ecu temp sender. Any tips? Ger
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted June 11, 2008 That is not the temp sender, it is the SAD (cold start valve). The ECU temp sender IS blue and is round the back of the thermostat housing.
gerlewislewis 0 Posted June 11, 2008 ahh right, I will take another look tonight. Cheers.
gerlewislewis 0 Posted June 11, 2008 ok, ive had a quick look. I cant see anything where it could be?!!! At the back of the block there is a 2 pronged connector below the red and blue single pin connnectors, near the exhaust manifold - but this seems to be the wrong area. Im not entirely sure where to look. can someone give me a pointer. Is the plastic sphere with the bicycle bleed valve on it the thermostat housing? Grim.Badger 15 Posted June 11, 2008 There are a few places where the ECU temp sender was fitted; one is below and to the right of the black one you have pictured, another is around the back of the thermostat housing with the other two coolant sensors and I think it may sometimes have been somewhere else but my memory could be playing up
gerlewislewis 0 Posted June 11, 2008 I have a connector which appears to be blue (hard to tell in the engine bay) below those 2 singular (red and black spades). So hopefully thats my boy. I dont have a deep set enough 3/4 socket so I will have to buy one. On a side note, I just disconnected it, and the car wont start AT ALL now, but it would earlier this evening when connected. Does this mean its fine or could it be intermittant? Lastly, I definately do not hear the fuel pump prime when the stop and battery lights come on. Should I? and could this be related to cold start problems? Ger cheers Grim Bagder

GLPoomobile 958 Posted June 11, 2008 If the car is refusing to start with the sensor unplugged it means one of 2 things, either the sensor is working correctly, or the sensor is intermittantly faulty. The latter is possible, my mums Corsa had this problem, and was giving weird results when resistance checked. Before that I always thought they either worked or they didn't. It sounds like you've found the right one anyway. It is a bit difficult to get off when in that location. IIRC I had to remove one (possibly both) of the other temp sensors (one is for the warning light and the other for the gauge) so that I could get an open ended spanner on the ECU temp sensor. gerlewislewis 0 Posted June 11, 2008 GLPoomobile: Ive just bought a deepset 19mm socket from Halfords to do the job, theres no way I can get a spanner in there!!!! Hopefully this will fix my cold start problem. Ive also got some new plugs, leads dizzy cap, rotor arm and tachymetric relay. The 'trouble' is, its warm every day now, so I cant re-create the problem!!! Ger
jackherer 543 Posted June 12, 2008 Ive just bought a deepset 19mm socket from Halfords to do the job, theres no way I can get a spanner in there!!!! IIRC a socket won't fit over the electrical plug part. I don't recall ever having a problem with a spanner but there have been several different positions for this sensor so I guess you may have one I've never come across. I cut an old spanner down with an angle grinder for undoing Mi16 oil pressure sensors under the inlet manifold and you may need to do the same.
gerlewislewis 0 Posted June 12, 2008 yeah a socket does fit over it.
jackherer 543 Posted June 12, 2008 I wonder what it is I'm remembering then, XU10 oil temp sensor maybe...?
