Engine Setting Up

Recommended Posts

Gavin Waddell

want to set up my engine properly, it was a dkz with monotronic 3.1 now its running d6b ecu and cam. Because it was a dkz the ecu ran everything now i need to dial in the 5degrees of advance, and was wondering if any one had any ideas on how. I used the dkz flywheel as i want to convert to megasquirt later and icould use the tdc, but i dont think it has the timing marks on it? Does any one know if it does?

Dunno if i understand your intention :( but you can't adjust ignition timing on this engine by turning the dizzy either way .

The system is ECU controlled , the dizzy is there just for transmitting the spark within the dizzy cap . (well it's "empty" , no bob weights , no springs , no induction coil , no vacuum advance mechanism no nothing except the shaft and rotor arm !)

Rgs ! :)

what im trying to say is that you can retard or advance the ignition buy moving the dizzy, my engine is d6b and not a dkz, but as the dkz is monotonic 3.1, i dont think it has the timming marks on the fly wheel. Wheres as the d6bwas jetronic and thus has timing marks on the flywheel so that you can set it up using a strobe lite. If tghat makes sensse

Forget the strobe light, all you can do with that is set it to the factory advance figure which is for eighties leaded four star fuel (and in your case for a different engine).

Set the timing by advancing the distributor bit by bit until you hear pinking under load in fifth at low speeds then retard it slightly until you no longer hear pinking. Make sure you fill up with the fuel you will normally be using first (i.e. super unleaded or whatever is available to you).

ok another question is that the fuel needs to be set as does the idle but when you advance the dizzy the revs pick up. so i was wondering if any one knew how much the idle screw has to be factory set (as in how many turns). Then i can advance the dizzy till i get a nice idle then i can set up the antipollution. Or is it a case of trial and error till i get it right.

I once went to pug performance and there was a guy caul paul ex raf who would setup the engines and he always got it spot on. Is he still there or does any one know him as he knew his stuff.

thanks Gavin

You can't just set one thing then move on to the next really, if its all out then you need to go round them all getting them close then go round again as they all affect each other to some degree. As you have noticed changing the timing affects the idle speed for example. You should be able to get most of it set by ear, the fuel adjustment is only effective at idle so once you've got the ignition advanced as I described in my last post wind the idle screw in or out as needed to get the idle to about 950 RPM (some engines are happier slightly higher than this in my experience) then trim the idle fuel mixture to clear any lumpiness. If its not chuggy and lumpy you would probably do best to leave the mixture alone until you can get a gas analyser on it, only tweak it if it has issues.
