Is There Any Advantage To Using Xu10 Injectors On A Inlet Cammed Mi16?

Recommended Posts

Stu

As above peeps, ive got a PeterT stage one inlet and chip in my Mi, and am just about to get a set of injectors refurbed for it. But, i wonder if theres anything else that would be an upgrade?

I keep seeing these supposed GrP A injectors on the bay, but they look nothing more than XU10's to me! I know the '6 injectors have a higher flowrate, but what about the others? I wonder how the stock motronic would deal with bigger injectors?

Answers on a postcard...

The injectors open for as long as the ECU tells them to. The amount of fuel injected in that time is down to the flow rate of the injector in question. If the injectors you change to have the same response time, but have a higher flow rate, you will simply run richer across the rev range due to the increased flow rate. If your engine is running lean across the rev range then this is one way to try and counter this, and you perhaps will gain a bhp or two. If your engine is not running lean across the rev range then it is a waste of effort that will only result in a bigger fuel bill. In summary you can't really tune by guesswork!

Yeah, it wouldnt be so much of a problem if id got a 3 row and lamdba, but i havent..

I just wondered if anyone had substituted them in and found a gain.. I do keep meaning to get the afr's checked out on the rollers, just never seem to get round to it..

Out of curiousity, on a non-lambda equipped car, how do RR's check the AFR's? is an exhaust probe accurate enough for this sort of thing?

Yes, exactly in the way an emissions test is done. The RR i use has a probe with a lambda in, but then also obviously takes it's own readings from various other places too depending on what you're doing and what the car is of course.

Without the ecu to control it, a bigger injector is pretty useless unless known to be needed as Tom says, 1.9 injectors flow fairly well anyway, i forget the figures right now, but essentially they're good upto around 180bhp.

Sweet, i seem to recall 180 being mentioned before. I'd have thought that they would be upto the job then.

Coolio..!

So, wheres best to get a set of injectors cleaned/reconditioned? I found this place, seems to be good value, and looks quite professional..

Click me for injector goodness

Yeah, ironically, i posted that link before i saw your reply in the other thread.. :(

So does the car feel any better now? What prompted you to get them serviced? For me, i just want to get them checked so i know they're right.

How much did it cost buddy?

If you just want to get them checked that can be done with a measuring cylinder and a stopwatch to see if they are even flow wise.

I could be wrong but i swear the 2.0Mi (S16) injectors actually flow less than the 1.9 GTi or Mi injectors...the latter being 215cc/min, not sure about the former.

As already mentioned, it'll just overfuel everywhere else, even if it did help up the top end...
