Little Nit Of Maintenence

Recommended Posts

i've got a bit too much time free at the moment and i feel like getting more to grips with engines. im going to give changing the cambelt a go in a couple of weeks and thought that while its off it it worth doing anything else? the engine sounds realy slightly tappety at about 3000 revs when held there, it isnt loud but if you listen closely then you can hear it. I'm assuming that this isnt normal. Any ideas of what it could be? and how it could be fixed?

Cheers

Tim

You may find the noise is simply a loose timing belt cover, its not unusual for these to rattle at 3kRPM ish.

Yes there is  however first you'll need to make sure from where you're getting this sounds ... as apart from the valve clearances it could also be cracked exhaust manifold , leaky exhaust manifold gaskets , leaky downpipe joint (mesh ring) , injectors or leaky inlet manifold .. all will produce similar sound just like noisy tappets .

Try measuring the valve clearances , it's not a hard job

Rgs !

ok, well seeing as i need to replace the starter motor i may as well make my job simple and at the same time i shall replace the seals on the inlet manifold, and injectors etc. and check the exhaust manifold for leaks and cracks and then get back to you.

cheers for the help
