Rattling Noise From Clutch When Engaged

Recommended Posts

Maccer

Hi,

I have a rattling noise coming from my clutch (I think!) When you depress the clutch is stops and starts as soon as you let off, and makes a different amount of noise depending on how you lift off - Clutch release bearing??

I'm new to 205's and I've just swapped the clutch and BE1 box on my car ('88 1.6). When I first put in the second hand box I'd got, the nuts that hold the sleeve over the input shaft weren't done up properly so it dumped it's oil first time round! I bought a new sleeve and gasket and re-assembled but I didn't put any grease over the sleeve where the bearing sits - doh!

Now i have this rattling noise. I have tried slackening the clutch cable a bit-no joy. Tried tightening the clutch cable right up and this stops the noise - presumably because the bearing is now in constant contact with the pressure plate spines - but is this right!!? With it set up like this the pedal is quite high and so is the bite point. How should the clutch be set up? Should I try and get some grease on the bearing/sleeve? I have taken this apart twice now and really hope I don't have to do a third time!! Any thoughts would be most appreciated!

Sounds like a typical noisy release bearing, was it a new one?

As Baz says, sounds like the release bearing. No option other than whiping the box off and swaping it.

Hi,

You said you swapped the clutch, was this a new clutch kit or just another clutch plate? I found when I first fitted a new 3 piece clutch kit on mine the bearing was a little noisy to start with then it cleared. Might be worth leaving it for a while if thats the case and see if it clears.

In fact, it could be a bearing in the gearbox... Has it got enough oil in?

The release bearing wasn't new, but the old clutch was barely worn at all so I thought that it would be alright to go in. I bought a 'Tecniclutch' off Ebay and they sent me a BE3 bearing and I'm still waiting on the BE1 one! With regard to the box oil, I filled it til it dripped so I assume it's full, but then I lowered it down by eye so not sure if it was dead level when I did fill it so I will check that again later on today and let you know.

On the actual setting up of the clutch, the bearing shouldn't be in permanent contact with the pressure plate splines? I should set it up so the bearing fully realeases from the plate and the bite point is relatively low?

Checked the geabox level, that was fine. Ruled out the realease bearing, think it's the input shaft bearing has seperated slightly so the box is coming out again!

aye, it'll be a gearbox problem (probably input shaft bearings as you said); if the noise gets worse when clutch is engaged then it's the release bearing

Got a new release bearing and put it all back together Wednesday night. Seems that the gearbox bearing was fine, but I did manage to snap a bolt trying to put the sleeve back on! All sorted now tho.

The ball joint on the release lever was also quite rattley, so I swapped for the one on the old box which had a better cup. Put the new bearing in, everything greased where it should be and it seems to be running ok. Still rattley in neutral every now and then but its a lot quiter now so I think I'll just leave it to run in and worry about it if it gets really really loud!
