Knocking Noise

Recommended Posts

swinney88

i have a knocking noise coming from my engine. it sounds like its coming from the drivers side. it happens at low revs say 3rd gear 20mph 5th gear 35-40mph. it happens up until about 2500 revs then i think it stops mite be i cant hear it over the engine exhaust noise. i was thinking it mite be the top engine mount but im not sure

any help appreciated

can you describe the noise a little better as knocking noise is a bit vague for diagnosis. Is it when moving or at idle or both, also is it directly related to engine speed?

doesnt happen at idle its related to speed if im putting my foot down it doesnt happen its when im driving normally and the revs are low it happpens in all gears up until about 2500revs.

if its related to vehicle speed rather than engine speed its generally drivetrain related or suspension. Start by checking drivehsafts and ball joints etc, even engine mounts. Make sure there is no excess movement anywhere.

Dip the clutch whilst driving along at said revs, if it's still doing it then it could possibly be the RHS driveshaft intermediate bearing.

Check the big ends by removing each plug and use a long screwdriver to press down on the piston crown.

There shouldn't be any noticable play. You might even hear the knock if it's bad enough

if it gets faster as you accelerate through the rev range then i'd say the right hand driveshaft bearing, exactly the same thing that happend to mine. you said you had a spare drive shaft (although i cant remember if you said left or right) if its the right one then just swap them over as its a simple job and will only take about an hour and a couple of litres of G/box oil and maybe a new seal (although you dont have to change the seal its probably best and there only a couple of quid of ebay) get under the car and check the right hand drive shaft is fully into the gear box as mine wasnt after the bearing had started going.
