Non Starting 1.6 Gti Ph2

Well, my ph2 gti started playing silly buggers!!! Started it up the other day, it ran for a while then stopped (I suspected it had run out of fuel) No such luck, the fuel is reaching the rail, but not injecting, and there is no spark. It also started locking and unlocking itself when turning ignition key!!!

Automatically, I suspected the Clifford alarm / immobiliser (which is a PITA anyway) so I have replaced the loom from the ignition switch to its two plugs that the alarm was fitted to-effectively removing the alarm - I hope.

It now cranks, has no spark and the injectors fire only once, when releasing the starter - a few topics report this, but I can't for the life of me find a solution when searching.

The manifold mounted coil has live to the 2 red wires (1 & 2 ?) and terminal 3 (yellow wire) becomes live when ignition switched on - I think this is wrong?. It is live at the coil - with the yellow wire disconnected, the wire is not live itself.

seems to me that te ecu either doesn't know thew engine is turning, or has ceased caring and needs replacing!!! ( I'll also swap with a known good amp and ecu)

The tachy relay works fine when swapped into my other gti

Any ideas???? please

Id shoot for an ignition amp first, or check the wires to it as there is 2 wires run from the dizzy to the ignition amp. When these fail or the amp itself fails you tend to get the symptons you describe.

Ta, guys, hopefully this will be it! will change it tomorrow and keep you posted!.

Just for interest, while I traced the dizzy wiring back, I removed the AFM and decided to investigate why the ol pressure gauge always registered max. I expected a short in the dreaded multiplug, but.....

pressure gauge, oil warning and starter solenoid wires trapped firmly between 'box and block. So I had to loosen off the gearbox and slightly separate to remove them. Gauge and starter wire had been bared, wouldn't it have been entertaining if the starter wire shorted too :D

Just for fun, the plastic thermostat cover was so brittle that the top hose part broke off completely just trying to move the hose slightly to extract the dizzy wiring. Ph 1 ally cover will be fitted tomorrow. Don't you just love these quick, simple Pug jobs? :o

ignition amp hasn't cured it  I have live at injectors, whilst cranking, but no neg. earth the injector and it sprays whilst cranking. I'm now off to swap ecu and check all earths.

OK, good fun here........ rear lights come on with ignition...WTF?

OH, sh1t - after noticing the rear lights on, I remembered seeing a "bit of smoke" from under the dash - a short on the glovebox light of all things! shortly before the car cut out. I noticed a burnt green wire by the light control stalk and traced it all the way back to the fuse box. That, of course, is no mean feat - amongst other things the dash is in the way!! I separated a few wires that had melted together - and I have fuel spitting from the injectors on cranking :wub::o

Not got the time to put it back together today, and need a new set of plug leads as the other ones fell to peices when checking for spark- but I'm very hopeful.

( I will be replacing the wiring in loom sections, rather than using insulating tape!!)

DON'T REPLACE A BLOWN FUSE WITH A HIGHER AMP. ONE !!!!! It can lead to a lot of work

Alot of my fuses in my fuse box were of a higher amp than what they should be, so swapped them all for the correct ones! I don't get why anyone would do that though? Random.

Hands up, I did it, in the hope the cause of the blowing would present itself :) How clever was that?
