Engine Mount Knocking On Strutbrace.

Recommended Posts

Flix

I've had a rattle for a while now and I've just dicovered the cause.

The lower engine mount is hitting the OMP strutbrace.

I've removed the brace at the moment and the noise has gone.

Could it be the mount that has gone soft or is it a bad design of brace?

I was thinking of fitting BBM mounts soon but will these cure it?

Do you get the drive train rocking and rolling when you set off in traffic?

If so, I'd suspect the engine mounts.

Has it always done it with the brace fitted or has it just started? I suppose the brace could have been bent if its just come on after being fitted for a while.

I get the noise on acceleration and when steering left, I've not had the car roadworthy for long and have had the brace on all the time.

I've removed it now and no noise, it doesn't look bent or damaged though, theres about a 10mm gap between it and the mount.

The rubbers seem soft to me, but I don't know what good ones are like.

I suspect the mounts as the car has been stood for 5 years.

I had an omp lower brace fitted with both a standard mount and an uprated lower mount and it never knocked. I would suspect your bottom mount is shagged.

I'm confused by this topic :(

I've assumed you are not talking about an upper strut brace, since this is no where near the lower engine mount, so you must be talking about the lower strut brace that fits to the subframe. But these lower braces fit to the front of the subframe, so again, are not near the lower engine mount.

Just re-read your post and the replies again, and I totally cannot fathom what is happening!

It seems to vary, some OMP Subframe braces are really close to the intermediate bearing/lower engine mount housing, others aren't, a stiffer bush may help, dont forget the smaller one in the fork.

The OMP 306 fit Lower brace is known for being really bad, not fitting at all.

Jeez I'm a pleb sometimes!

I was convinced that the lower strut brace was no where near the lower mount. Visualising it in my mind I could see the brace being in front of the sump, and the lower mount being behind the subframe. Had a look for some pictures and now realise I'm wrong. Sorry about that

So as already said, yes it's most probably a worn lower mount bush causing it to move and touch the brace.

A few years ago a mate bought an upper momo brace, fitted it to his lazer green. All was lovley until he closed the bonnet. It pushed the bonnet hinge off the inner wing :D Ive always had a fear of strut braces since. :)

I fitted a lower strut brace too but it knocked, and vibrated virtually all the time so it was removed.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll get some better mounts and if that doesn't stop it the brace will be in the skip.

If that were true then it makes you wonder why the rally cars all had additional stiffening on the subframes.... :)
