Gti-6 Exhaust On The Cheap

Recommended Posts

gti-si

Basiaclly, I have serached but couldn't find anything from the angle I need. I need to get my car MOT'd and then get it down to DES in b'ham to have a proper exhaust fitted. I can't afford to rent a trailor and also need to drive it to the testing station anyway. So..

I've got a group N system, which is straight through to the backbox, at around 1.5" diameter pipe. That's mated to a 1.9 downpipe. Is there anyway I can mate this to the gti-6 engine? If possible, i'd like to know how I should go about it from experience, I.e, where to cut the pipe, where to weld etc. I need to do this as cheaply as possible, doesnt need to be a proper flowing example, just enough to get me on the road

Any help will be much appreciated

If you can, get underneath the car with the exhaust roughly hanging where you want it at the back, and see how much the downpipe needs needs shortening by, as it can vary between cars with different exhausts/engine mounts etc.

I shortened mine by about 5 inches, I did have some pictures of how I did mine on the computer, but couldn't find them.

it all depends how the engine is fitted, has it been re-angled to clear the bulkhead or has the bulkhead been bashed etc.

With mine the engine was re-angled, the gti downpipe flange is a direct fit to the gti6 exhaust manifold in terms of size and bolt holes so its just a case of cutting and welding. I offered mine up to get an idea in my head of how much too long it was and how far off the angle was. I then cut the flange off and fixed it to the dowpipe with the O ring in place. Then prudently trimmed the downpipe a piece at a time until it sat up snug to the flange and neatly in the exhuast tunnel. then a quick spot weld in situ and dop the lot back out with flange attached and fully weld it up. Took about 45mins all in and was spot on afterwards

That's exactly what I needed, cheers Richie. It was puzzling me how I was going to weld it in situ...Ofcourse just a spotweld is enough to drop the lot back down in one piece to weld. I'll get on this tomorrow! Any ideas where I can get an O ring? Any exhaust place do?

Peugeot sell them as a complete kit for around £15.

Also the group N and std downpipe will flow more than enough power for a std GTI6.

I think he means a complete clamp kit for the mani-downpipe joint which includes the o-ring.
