What Lube To Use When Engine Rebuilding

Recommended Posts

Hiya guys

I'm finally ready to start rebuilding my Mi16 engine.

I was told that i should get hold of some Cam Lube or Engine Assembly lube to coat all the moving parts i.e bearings etc

so that when i turn the engine over to presurise it with oil everything will be lubricated so there will be little or no wear caused.

I've been to Halford and some local auto factors but i'm having no luck in tracking some down.

I was wondering what have you guys used, when rebuilding your engines?

Also what kind of oil do you use when running in the rebuilt engine?

Most of my engine has be rebuild with 2nd hand parts. The only parts which needs to "wear in" are the new piston rings and re honed liners. So there shouldn't be too much metal being produced as its worn in.

Hope you can help

If you're having trouble finding cam lube, some gear oil would be ok.

I used some stuff from Frosts as i was placing an order there anyway.

You just need something that wont dry up anytime soon, or run away from where it is put. It needs to stay everywhere it goes, or it will just drain down off of the components.

As for running in, a basic mineral oil is normally used. Anything fancy can actually inhibit the running in process, as it can stop things running in properly. Due to its anti friction properties etc, which isnt what you want when running in. It also gets changed pretty fast and frequent, so no need to waste money or uber oils

A concoction of lithium grease mixed with engine oil into a thick syrup was recommended once on here by an engine builder.

Never tried it myself, but apparently it sticks well.

Seem to remember Matt at QEP recommended gear oil - EP90 I think. That's what I'm using building up my Mi16.
