pp205 17 Posted June 2, 2008 Hi, very annoyingly the big end bearings have gone on my rebuilt 1.9 Mi The crank now needs a re-grind which means my 1.6 gearbox is coming off to get the crank out. The 1.6 box cheeses me off as it just makes the engine noise too loud over about 55 mph but a mate at work has a 405 sri box I can have. Now I am clueless when it comes to gear ratios, etc. But looking at the Sri gearbox spec it doesn't look too different to the 1.6 box spec. So can somebody please confirm if I should bother getting it or put up a wanted ad for a 1.9 ti or Mi box? Thanks for any info Simon
lee-bg 0 Posted June 2, 2008 if i am not mistaken, with the SRI box if its from an 8v engine you would reach higher speeds but slower time to reach it 1,6 is faster, but high speed is lower. Depends what you want to use the car for if for highway cruising put the SRI, if for speedy Revving keep the 1,6. Best would be a Mi16 gearbox as its optimal for high speed and fast revving. DamirGTI 342 Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) I have SRi gearbox on my modified 8v engine it's like mix of 1.6 and 1.9 box ratios : 1-st 2-nd are short (the 3-rd one could also be short , although im not sure must check the ratios ) , of identical ratio as in the 1.6 box , 3-rd 4-th and 5-th are longer particularly the 5-th one ... anyway i quite like this box , it's very quiet for open road driving but still good for driving around the town or on twisty up hill roads I've bought this box from a mate who had this SRi box on 405 Mi16 car , and he didn't like it , said that the ratios where too long for 405 Mi16 car so i dunno how it'll perform on a 16v engine Rgs ! Anthony 1,003 Posted June 3, 2008 If I recall, a 405 SRi box is basically Mi16 ratios with a 4.06 final drive (as opposed to 4.4 for an Mi16 'box).

pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted June 3, 2008 I think it'd be to long in fourth & fifth for an Mi as Damir's friend found. First to third wouldn't be to bad (first & second are very similar to the 1.6 but with a longer third), fourth is almost the same as fifth gear in the 1.9 GTi gearbox as standard with fifth longer still (4k @ 90mph iirc). I used to have one on my tuend 8v & although it was great for motorway journeys, once you got back onto the A & B roads it spoilt the car. Mi box will be the best choice if possible. Graham. pike_1.9cti 0 Posted June 3, 2008 Gutted to hear bout you car!! Was goin to stop of at yours when i was passing next to see the results of your long awaited transplant. Was interested in the 1.6 box on a powerful engine. Hope you get something sorted quickly and cheaply!
pp205 17 Posted June 3, 2008 Thanks for the replies guys I think I will stick with the 1.6 box for the moment then and track down a Mi16 box locally Ben - pop round sometime, I am hoping to have it up and running by the end of next week although I will have to run it in again! It was running very sweetly before the bearings went and had surprised a fair few people in it!
