Rear Beam

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've just got round checking the rear beam.... Yes I know it's been over a year but I finally got the urge to sort it out. I've replaced the drivers side front mount on the beam and still no difference. The mount was exactly the same as the one remove. I'm totally confused why it's sitting strange...

The picture above is of the drivers side rear mount, the passenger side sits at the back of the hole. I've measured the distance from the front mount to the bar that the rear mount attaches to and it's the same either side?! How can that be? I've also measured the distance between shock bolts to check if the beam is level and again it's the same either side, Yet it sits lower on the drivers side? I've measured the distance between the hub and bottom of the sill and its different.

I'm totally confused, Could the casings on the tube be twisted causing it to sit a little strange?

Thanks,

Dan

In reply to your PM Pob, no I've not done anything on this to be honest apart from driving it. Seems to drive fine, pulls up straight and doesn't appear to be crabbing at all. Only way to check for sure is a proper 4 wheel alignment appointment, which is on the cards very soon once all the welding is finished on mine.

Probably down to a crap build in the factory.

Thanks for the reply. I've been to the local dealer and they haven't came across wonky castings... They said they would have a look at it for me but I'll have MOT it first. I'll let you know my findings

Mine drives fine too so it's all a little confusing

Many thanks,

Dan

Just thought I'd ask here instead of opening another rear beam thread.

I've lowered my beam with it off the car and set the distance between the damper bolts to 305mm. Problem is I put it back on the car and I've got 20cm ground clearance on the left and 17 cm on the right, so 3 cm difference from one side to the other. Where did I go wrong? I must mention that I don't have struts on the front at the moment, I just have the front subframe sitting on two stands, but they are of equal height and symmetrically placed.

I know I'm being childish and I should just wait until my front suspension arrives and just put the car down and see how it settles, but I just don't see how that could account for 3 cm difference at the back and unfortunately patience is not one of my virtues.

Thanks in advance,

Andrei

You can't accurately tell if the ride height will be the same if the front isn't sat on the floor as normal imo.

I found this when I swapped struts on my 306 whilst refurbing the beam, it sat at different heights everytime, even when I put the orignal bits back on it sat higher. Now I've got the first set of springs I tried (Eibachs) & its sat just where I want it.

If you set the rear ride height accuratelty (dummy shock or a piece of wood drilled for the botls) then even with them set the same, uneven ground can make a difference.

Graham.
