Big Puddle In Drivers Footwell, After Rain.

Recommended Posts

gerlewislewis

Right, my latest problem is the drivers footwell has a 1 inch deep puddle in it after all this bank holiday rain!

After some brief inspection I have noticed that it is on top of the carpet and NOT under the carpet or on the sound proofing.

So it must be coming from above.

Also, I have noticed it seems to be dry under the seat, and near the door, so its coming from the central console area.

I have done a forum search and these seem common places to start looking:

1.bulkhead seam sealer has split

2, You might have a rust hole in the bulkhead just at the drivers footwell.

3. Could be the windscreen,

4. remove the scuttle panel as it locates under the windscreen rubber,

5. heater matrix.

6. sunroof drain holes.

can someone recommend a place to start?!

Im thinking of drying it out in the garage then pouring water into different areas to see what happens.

bummer!

Ger

Same problem with mine. It was the door seal that was leaking in though. Best way of finding the problem is a jet wash. Get some one to sit inside the car and go round it with the jet wash and they should be able to see where its coming in.

I had this and it turned out to be the windscreen seal. It had happened on the passenger side too and manged to soak the fuse board too

I just went round any gaps in the seal carefully with silicone.

my puddle in the passenger foot well was the windscreen in the drivers bottom corner, dripped down, along the bulk head, down the inside of the trim to the floor. I have taken all of my dash out to check for evidence of other windscreen leakes and that is the only one I could find.

my other puddle in the front was my heater matrix, this is evident by water dripping through the join in the heater assembly above your radio or residue from where it has done...

best option for the windscreen is on a nice dry spell of weather seal it from the OUTSIDE so that the water doesn't get in at all with some nice windscreen sealer, I got mine from https://www.classicsagogo.co.uk/ very cheap!

hope this helps

I found the passenger footwell on my new 205 was full of water today after a couple of days of heavy rain and it was coming through the fan inlet under the scuttle panel. The drain in the left wing was blocked and the under scuttle area was full of water so I reached into the drain area by the wing and hooked out some leaves and crap then loads of water poured out from between the wing and sill as it should have done in the first place. I've solved the problem but I still have to dry the interior out, I've got three 205s outside at the moment, two of them have no interiors to speak of but its the one with a carpet thats filled up with water

Hi Gerlewislewis, couldn't see your link, this is the stuff I got:

Windscreen sealer

I haven't taken the screen out, just the scuttle out and the wipers off, you can get to most of the rubber that way, I am considering taking the screen out and them pumping the rubber full if i still get a leak, just to make sure!

How do you remove the scuttle panel? I can see the torx bolts, but it seems to go up under the windscreen seal.

Tommer, My windscreen seal has an oval hole in each bottom corner, why are these there? seems silly to have holes in!!!

Jack, yeah my interior is soaking, and its in the garage at the moment cos its pouring down outside - gonna take a while to dry!

oh Jack, when the water came in to your car from the fan inlet, where did it pour onto the carpet? - I havent worked out where mine is coming onto the carpet yet.

Gerlewislewis - The scuttle just sits up underneath the seal, you need to wriggle it out from underneath. Thats the easy bit, its getting it back in thats fun

I've got the same problem with my FTO. Drivers side footwell is essentially a goldfish tank after any rain.

The rain seems to be getting in to the door "frame" seal and is running along the inside of it and then exiting at the bottom of the seal where it hits the inside of the car chassis near the sill. This then runs over a couple of wires and onto my drivers side footwell. The carpet is ok, but the underlay and sound proofing is ruined.

It was never like this before the garage took the interior out to fit some rust on the roof. Now it just floods.

Gonna have to book it in at a bodyshop sometime. So for now, as we've got ongoing rain, I have to leave the drain plug in the drivers footwell out. Just gotta remember to put it back in when I got driving in the rain.

I saw a drip come from somewhere near to the bottom of the fan itself which is what drew my attention to it.

Scuttle, you need to take the wipers off, then under the torx screws then it should just pull off upwards from the front, the tricky bit is where it covers the fan intake as it can be tight and make some snapping noises. it is tucked into the window rubber but will just pullout.

Yes it does seem silly, I assumed it was to allow any water that accumulated within the seal to flow out, or to allow condensation out but I am not convinced, I blocked mine up so that no water could get in, as they seem suspectingly close to where my windscreen leak is!

I hope you aren't taking it back to the same place. I wouldn't trust any bodyshop that had fitted rust to my car!

:P:)

I didn't notice that. It was supposed to say "fix". :)

But no, its going to a local bodyshop. Same old problem of sending it to the "recommended specialist" that is 100's of miles away so that they do the perfect job and you don't need to worry. But oh no, it comes back wrong and its a pain in the backside trying to get it fixed. Story of my life at the moment.

I took the scuttle panel off.

Should the fan inlet have some kinda cover? what stops rain water gushing into it? also if water does get in , does it have a drain hole? as mine is uncovered (you can put your hand in and feel the cone turbine.

My wing drain holes are unblocked - at the top at least. where do they come out the other end? - and is there anywhere along the way that can get into the cabin?

My window seal also seems fine, but I cant see what else it could be!

Gonna go the hose pipe test this weekend

ok, further inspection after thinking about Captain Ks post was the drivers door seal, and low and behold it seems theres a gap!

Im gonna get some glue (car paint/metal to rubber - any suggestions) and see if thats the solution!

The fan inlet is only covered by an area of the scuttle panel with no grill. If the scuttle area fills up with water once it gets high enough it enters the cabin through the fan itself.

Water drains through the gap between the wing and the sill just in front of the door, its unlikely to get in the cabin at this stage though IMO.

Well just been to B&Q and bought some contact adhesive, its all done and drying as we speak. Once the carpet is fully dry, I will stick it back out in the rain!!

Fingers crossed.
