Mot Advisory Notice, What Does This Mean?

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

My 205 passed it MOT on Saturday; I always end up acting like an expectant father when it is being tested.

The car has been given two advisory notices.

‘Nearside front suspension joint has slight play in a lower suspension ball joint [2.5.B.1a]’

And

‘Offside front suspension joint has slight play in a lower suspension ball joint [2.5.B.1a]’

What does this mean and what do I need to replace?

The car is a 1.6 with a 1.9 8v lump so are there any useful upgrades?

The car has 157k on the clock and is used as a weekend/track toy.

Thanks

Jonny

advisories are just notes and you're not obliged to fix the problems to get the cert. does seem odd that they'd not fail it if they thought there was play in the balljoints though. you need new bottom arms to fix things - they're about £50ea and aren't too difficult to fit

that is good news

imho, i'd say either your wishbone ball joints are on the way out, or you may have slight ovality in the hubs, where the wishbone balljoint sits

'Slight play' for now if you can't feel it driving then carry on for a while, but worth noting and maybe keeping your eyes peeled for a pair of replacements.

To fail it needs to be excessive play.

The MOT test is a complete load of s*ite tbh. So much is not covered, or very lax.

Jack it up yourself and have a feel, any play will be noticable.

Even slight play is normally very noticeable when driving in a 205 GTI.

I agree, swap them now before you need new hubs as well.

A useful upgrade could be a rose jointed adjustable arm set as featured in one of Spikys group buys.

couldnt agree more.

as far as upgrades go, you'll find 2 new arms will be more of an 'upgrade' than anything else
