Tommer 0 Posted May 25, 2008 Hi all, I bought new rear window rubbers for my gti to fix the lovely wet rear footwell problem, "great" I thought this will solve that! uh, no.... my horror this morning when I thought I would check after all the rain last night, to find more water dripping from the new rear window seals (both sides!). I have 2 theories: 1) the seals just leak slightly and there is nothing i can do about it (apart from maybe build a garage) 2) that the seam between the window panel and the roof is leakingpic 1 (left) pic 2 (right), the water is going down between the "skins" of panel and dripping though the top of the window hole where the rubber pushes onto (and the 2 skins meet), its then dripping on the inside of the rubber, running around the inside to the bottom and leaking out and into the carPic 1 (left) pic 2 (right)... make sense? If theory 2 sounds feasible, do you reckon if i dig out all the sealer from here (pic) dry it out and then pack it full of new fresh seam sealer (so there are no cracks like there are at the moment) it might prevent it? if not i think i'm going to go mad ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. any suggestions more than welcome as I have to walk away from it to calm myself slighty... cool, calm, collected. Tommer 0 Posted May 27, 2008 I've decided when I get home from work, as long as its dry I'm going to dig out the old sealer and pump the gap full of new stuff and mastik! see if it leaks then!
djinuk 2 Posted May 27, 2008 will have to get it sprayed im guessing. My 205 has cracks here and also along the bottom of the rear 1/
Super Josh 4 Posted May 27, 2008 Can you remove the headlining and see if any water is getting in past the sealant? Josh
tri_longer 25 Posted May 27, 2008 Had a similar problem and just took the exisiting rubber off and whacked on some clear silicone sealant and refitted rubber. Not had a leak since.
Tommer 0 Posted May 27, 2008 I haven't even contemplated removing the headlining, I think it will be too much of a pain. and to be honest the water only drips from the bottom of the window rubbers in the back so its either the window rubbers leaking or my theory about the water coming in through the cracks, either way Its going to need new seam sealer, and yes it will look 5h1t for a bit, but I'd rather it looked 5h1t from the outside and didn't leak, besides it will only be til its gets sprayed. there was loads of mastik on there, but it was all lumpy and made the seal worse but i'll have play around when its dryer
Tommer 0 Posted May 29, 2008 Like a fool i attempted to remove the windscreen in a rush and broke it, not happy, new windscreen tomorrow...
gerlewislewis 0 Posted May 29, 2008 dry it all out, then tape toilet paper and stuff toilet paper in to various areas, then run a hose over it and see which bit of paper gets wet first.
Tommer 0 Posted May 30, 2008 I know where the leak is coming from, its the only place there is no dust, and the only place there is limescale and residue that you can follow down to the floor hehe
