Snapped Bolt In Bonnet – How Can/should I Remove It?

Recommended Posts

As above, I have a replacement less faded bonnet for my 205 but one of the four threaded bolt holes has a snapped bolt stuck in it.

Because of the way the bonnet is shaped it is tricky to get to.

Ignore the cardboard and the masking tape that is there so I don't scratch it against the wall.

Any ideas on how I can remedy the problem?

Thanks

Jonny

looks like you going to have to drill it out, Drill a hole through the center of it and then use a reverse threaded bolt removing tool on a drill to get it out.

probably your best bet.

That was my plan but when I looked it over the chuck of the drill fouls the bonnet.

I am not sure but that might just be the only way.

Thanks for the thought though.

Try using a chuck extension on the drill, very usefull for getting to the tight places!

Get a long drill bit. Drilling it out is the only way to do it.

You could always drill a larger access hole in the return edge of the bonnet to use a longer drill bit, won't show when closed

I can't see how deep is the bolt inside , if it's not too deep beyond the surface place one nut on top (well you'll need MIG welder  ), and weld the bolt with the nut by welding trough the nut hole straight down on to the bolt remains , weld until you fill up the nut hole completely and then just undo the nut ...

Hope this helps ! :D

I thought of going in from behind  but my lack of ability put me off. Good lateral thinking though.

I have had bit of a ‘go’ tonight. I have managed to drill a hole (although not totally parallel to the bolt) and am working my way up the drill bits, I need to get some new sharper ones and replace the two I have snapped tonight. I will try aging tomorrow when B & Q open.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will report back.

Well I have drilled the nut out but also the thread of the hole as well.

Adding to the complication is that the ‘new’ hole is not square with the bonnet so it could be interesting to re tap.

Thank for everyone’s help.
