Furiousd 0 Posted May 23, 2008 I've noticed that my coolant level warning light is coming on when I press the accelerator. Not all the time, mainly at motorway speeds or when giving the car some beans I've checked the level and its fine. Any Idea's what’s causing this? Cheers Chris
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted May 23, 2008 Knackered sensor in the header tank perhaps?
Anthony 1,003 Posted May 23, 2008 Phase 2 cars are very sensitive to what I believe is ignition noise causing the low coolant light to come on. Phase 1/1.5 cars don't suffer this because of the different style header tank and sensor.
GLPoomobile 958 Posted May 23, 2008 How does the Ph2 sensor work? I know it has two prongs which stick up inside the water, so does it rely on passing current through the water from the positive prong to the negative, or is it something else?
Furiousd 0 Posted May 23, 2008 (edited) I am I ok not to worry too much about it then if its just the sensors electrics? As long as I keep an eye on the level until i get round to fixing it Chris Edited May 23, 2008 by Furiousd

I assume it works like you describe Steve. With coolant above the exposed tips of the prongs it conducts to complete the circuit so the light is off but when it drops below the light comes on. Doesn't explain why the HT leads effect it, if routed to close to the sensor though. I am I ok not to worry too much about it then if its just the sensors electrics? As long as I keep an eye on the level until i get round to fixing it Fixing it is easy, just neaten /re-position the run of the HT leads so they run as far away from the sensor in the bottom of the header tank as possible & you shouldn't have any more problems. 2052006 10 Posted May 25, 2008 I had the same problem (ph 2) - took the sensor out and cleaned it up - it was covered in gunk and it's been fine ever since.
