Rear Wheels

Recommended Posts

eddie bullit

I know its been mentioned before but cant find the thread, the gap between n/s rear wheel and arch is different to the o/s. I can fit two fingers between tyre and arch on one side but not on the other. Any ideas? Is it rear beam trouble?

Any help would be grat chaps

cheers..

is it the drivers side that has less clearance?

a worn out beam is the most likely explanation, could also be a bent trailing arm or stub axle, or cream crackered mounting bushes.

or a bent wheel!

Quite common on 205's. No real solution. Various options though:

Bent beam tube

Collapsed outer beam bearings

1.6 front beam mounts and a low ride height

new tyres with lots of tread and a square sidewall

Knackered rear beam mounts

Beam needs tightening up where it mounts

My CTI actually catches on 1 side and the beam is good as I refurbished it. I have not found the answer yet but stil have some more theorys to try like the 1.9 beam mounts

It's down to the 205 build quality or lack of it, Much like sticking the 16v engine's in some fit and some don't

Actually the front mounts are not, the 1.9 ones are a bit offset, moving the beam approx 1cm forward, or was it backward? Can't remember now.

I didn't think so either, but just saw the difference when I was working on some beams.

yeah, fitted correctly 1.9 front mounts place the beam 10mm or so forward, hence why they are handed and marked D and G :)

Nope 100% sure there is a difference between the two as I have a set of each and the part numbers on service box are different.

It was my thread you talking about. I swopped a 309 beam over on my 205 after a smack, and it sat a little pissed. Shell checked out straight. I checked all the above things, and I've just given up and decided to replace new everything. Only way to be sure, and if its still there then its down to s*ite build quality. AS long as the wheels are evenly spaced front to back its OK.

I've just pulled the beam off and noticed something interesting. The holes on the passenger side have locating, round hole, whilst the other hole like the drivers side are more like slots allowing some adjustment?

Oh, and the 1.9 mounts are unique from Left to Right, 1.6 and 309 are the same as each other. Considered buying new ones but they are £45 each!

Seems like alot of rear beams on 205's aren't quite right. I've managed to get mine level and square but now the ARB won't go on without a little help from a jack, about 1/2 inch out!

The arb has a different number of splines on each end (just like the torsion bars) so if it won't fit without any assitance, with both end plates removed rotate one spline at a time before trying them again in the tube to see if the line up un-assisted. If not try the next spline round.

Its a time consuming job (or can be) but worth it for the ease of fitting & to avoid putting twist into the arb before its got weight on the wheels.

Graham.

what part of the front mount is different?

the offset of the 2 studs that go through the shell, on 1.9 ones that is, 1.6, base model and 309 ones are all the same and not offset (front to back)

Hence why they are marked D and G, Droite et Gauche  fit a 1.9 and 1.6 mount and the beam will sit on the piss, fit 1.9 ones to the wrong side and the beam will sit too far back.

1.6 / 309 look like:

_____________

O O

------------------

1.9 look like:

_____________

O O

------------------

Gold star to the first person with a pic of both side by side!

Edit: Damn, the spacing didn't work!!

cant do a pic of them side by side, this do?

you can clearly see the letter "D" for Droite on the mounting and that the studs are not central, I can take a pic of the 1.6/309 brackets tomorrow If I remember.
