Cleaning Steering Wheel.

What is the best thing to use to remove dirt from an old steering wheel.

The leather is knackered so I'm not expecting a showroom shine, I'm not even fussed if it is dull still, I'd prefer that as it'll be less slippery.

I just want to remove the 100 odd thousand miles of dirt that's on there to stop it from transferring onto the light suede patches on my racing gloves!

Will white spirit or similar do the job?

I took mine off and washed it in the bath, along with a load of other interior parts. Warm water and fairy liquid did a great job

Be careful whatever you use doesn't kill the leather!

I was advised to use saddle soap when I asked this question waay back.

It does work, without damaging the leather, but its a bit messy.

APC, (all purpose cleaner) at a weak solution will do the trick. Remember to after washing and drying to treat the leather. The APC will make short work of all that dead skin caught in the grain.

A more expensive option is to use a good leather cleaner.

washing up liquid on a warm damp cloth. A going over with autoglym leather cleaner afterwards would be good if the steering wheel is a goodun.
