V8Pete 0 Posted May 21, 2008 I've got a trackday in a couple of weeks and my GTI box has started getting death rattles. I've got an Mi16 and box in the garage awaiting conversion - will an 8v be drivable and OK performance-wise with an Mi16 box temporarily?
Ahl 4 Posted May 21, 2008 Yes. I swapped a mi16 box onto my 8v too when my clutch went and I had an mi16 clutch and box spare. You might even like the lower ratios if the track is quite twisty, but regardless it is perfectly drivable. The fifth gear isn't noticeabley different to the 8v box for motorway cruising etc.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted May 22, 2008 Like Ahl, I can't see why it wouldn't be OK. First to third might be a little short for a 1.9 but it'll tell you when its had enough revs & to change gear. Graham.
V8Pete 0 Posted June 1, 2008 Well that was a cock up Lost 5th and reverse by dropping the selector shaft down when swapping the levers over. Didn't realise anything was wrong until I had it in the car. Tried fixing it in situ but just couldn't get enough room to swing the hammer to bash the pins out. Has anyone managed to do it in situ? Trackday's in 10 hours and a 3 hour drive from here so I won't be going.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted June 1, 2008 Unlucky, Its easy enough to do if you have room to drop the diff off as you can reach through to move the shaft back into the correct place but you still need the lever off. When the shaft drops it moves from between a fork where it moves the selector both ways to one side where it just pushes & has no effect in the oposite direction. Graham.
