Diesel Gentry Ever Been Done?

Recommended Posts

PsychoSimon

Hi again guys, long time no speak. for those who don't remember/know I had an accident november 06 where a branch pierced my back and snapped my spine. I'm now wheelchair bound 75% of the time (and the other 25% I'm lay under my 4x4 project :D ) and have started getting back into the cars. I'm currently putting a 2.9v6 ford engine and auto box into a lada niva for off roading.

Being as I can't drive a manual, and have been longing after a 205 again since my crash I have decided that when the lease runs out on my motability car I want a gentry. I would love it to have the 1.9td engine in it though....

I have done this conversion with a manual box into a 1.8 zest diesel I had not long before my accident, but was wondering if it would work with the auto box? Mainly gear changing at the right times etc with the lower rev limit? I know everything should bolt together OK but would it work right?

I would consider either a 1.8 or 2.0 16v if the diesel wouldn't work for whatever reason, but I really want a bit of economy as the v6 is going to be my thirsty toy

Just to note, I've been down the mi16 route, and don't drive fast any more so another diesn't interest me. I made a big enough mess of myself last time round to be driving like a tit again!!!

Hope all the oldies I used to speak to are well,

Simon

I have a friend with a desel ZX automatic, and ive worked on another before now. Ive never seen a turbo desel one though, id imagine the TD is too tourquey for the autobox belts.

Im fitting a heater matrix to it in 2 weeks time, so ill see what the box part number is if its different to other 205 boxes, but tbh i think they will be the same.

Good to see you back under cars again

EDIT...

IMO for cheepness consider fitting LPG as derv prices are sky high and not all pumps work with veggy oil...

Thanks inferno, it's good to be back!!

LPG could be an option, but I would rather a diesel. I have a bsch pump from the last engine I had, which I beleive will run on veg?

A part number would be helpful thank you

Xantia's TD were available with autoboxes from memory, so it's plausable to use the gearbox off one of them I'd imagine...

Xantia box wouldnt be a straight swap... i think there a lot bigger than the gentry box.

Bosch pumps will run veg oil yes.

Desel responds well with LPG too though, just taps it in like noz and gives upto 30% power increase...

the xantia petrol turbo also came in auto too.

i'm going to be putting a xantia turbo engine to a standard 205 auto box later in the year. Don't know how long it will last though.

My grandad bought a Citroen BX NA diesel automatic brand new in 1990, so I'd imagine a box from one of those would fit into a 205, don't know if its different to the Xantia TD auto box mentioned above though.

welcome back simon, hope all is well

The xantia box is no larger physically than the other pug auto boxes, it just uses a short stepper arm on the end of the box to the mount which is easy enough to swap for a normal mount on the box. Also the pug auto boxes tend to shift around 3.5k which should be fine with a td, even with the kickdown they shift at 6 ish, the td should just reach shifting point for the box before it runs out of revs. You will need the throttle cable holder from another pug auto though as they are designed to take 2 cables for the kickdown. Most 2.0 8v engines have this as standard.

PS, why not start with an STDT? same trim level as gentyry but already a turbo derv :D

mate of mine has a diesel gentry, albeit a manual, with a 306dturbo engine. don't think it was that hard to do. goes rather well for a denzel too. rather gay bonnet vent on it for the intercooler tho!
