Creeking From The Rear

No, not me... the car!

Its pretty hard to hear it with the exhaust growling but it seems to happen the most over small bumps at low speed, doesnt happen over speed bumps. It also happens when i get out of the car.

Any ideas what it could be?

#prays its not the rear beam on the way out#

I'm afraid it probably is the beam bearings going. Theres plenty of people on here who do beam rebuilds so i'm sure one of them can sort it for you.........in exchange for money :)

Very possibly the rear beam is on its way out.

Get it done now before it progresses to being beyond repair without major expense. (£100 now or £300+ later)

Graham.

I had some similar noises from mine but wanting to do a good brake restore anyway I opted for a full beam restore. Its really not that bad if you don't mind using some persuasion techniques. New barings and seals and one or two nuta and bolts and mine is ready to re-assemble. Got to mine before the shafts got damaged or corroded.

Thanks for you comments guys. Doesnt seem to be as expensive as i thought it would be, providing i dont leave it too long as mentioned. However, the noises have stopped now but i still want to upgrade the rear beam anyway. Time to read multiple 205 vs 309 rear beam topics. Exiting... If i were to stick with a 205 beam, would it be worthwhile to use a 1.9 beam (mine is currently 1.6), and what size tb, arb, etc is recomended?

jonnie205 - Cheers for the offer but dont worry mate, i think you're a bit too far away from me, i dont really fancy lugging the beam halfway across the country. taylorspug is like 5 minutes away from me so ill get him on the job.

The 1.6 & 1.9 205 GTi beams have the same size torsion bars so you'll gain no benefit from swapping from one to the other besides the disc brakes which can be more hassle than the drums due to the less effective handbrake.

Rear TB's are a fairly personal choice but ideally they will be a close match to the front springs in use in lb rating so they don't upset the handling to much.

Rear arb's are also persanal dependant but a good choice (about the best for road use is 20/21mm tb's & a 23mm arb).

Johnnie would you quote a price to do my rear beam?

It has just started creaking , a mechanic said park on a hill with the rear facing uphill and just put it into reverse and work it a little on the handbrake and it will go quiet again. I did that and it worked, so it would seem that the beams arent used to upwards motion and doing that must 'self lubricate' in effect.

But i would like it sorted long term, and i am not too far from you.

Let me know mate.

Pete,

1600 and 1900 beams are the same tb and arb size-wise. For a cheap upgrade it may be worth getting one of the 205 parts resplined 306 ARBs (theres a topic in the group buy section). Ive got one i need to send up to them myself. Any more than that and you are looking at bigger tbs etc. Unless you can find a 309 beam for sensible money. Either way i can rebuild it so no troubles there. I do them exchange aswell so i wont need the beam off your car to rebuild (ie it doesnt need to spend half a week in my shop!). You phoned me the other day, probably about this, and i forgot to call back- sorry!

Speak to you soon mate. :D
