malyso 0 Posted May 18, 2008 I've narrowed down an annoying knocking at the nearside front to a worn steering rack where the steering rod goes into the rack housing, i think there seems to be a bush there and now alot of play in the round steering bar. Where is the best deal for a new replacement rack for a 1.6 manual not pas. cheers in advance... Mark
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted May 18, 2008 I bought an exchange steering rack from my local motor factors for less than £40 about 18 months ago, so ring your usual car spares place and ask them. Otherwise GSF may be worth a phone call. For info there are two different types of manual rack, one has a square pinion where the column attaches, the other has a round pinion with splines. It is easy to see which you have when you take your old one off, but they will (or SHOULD) ask you when you buy a new one which one you want. The changeover point seems to be around 89-90, with earlier cars having the splines, later ones having the square, or so I've found anyway.
malyso 0 Posted May 18, 2008 Thanks Tom I will ring the factors tomorrow, it is the plastic bush that is worn. I guess its turned a few corners in its 20yr life...
