StuF215 1 1 Cars Posted May 16, 2008 Hi I have tried a search on this as im sure I came across a post in the past involving this but it didnt come up trumps. I have removed the vacuum advance from my distributor in an effort to clean it all up. However I cant seem to get the bugger back on! So my question is.. Do I need to refit it, and can I just blank up the hole?? Im running carbs on an mi16 and am not using the vacuum advance anyway; but im worried that internal mods are needed and its not a simple case of just removing it. I have tried rotating the internals by removing the screws in the side but it wont go on! Can anyone help, doing Aintree on the 31st May and the list of things to do seems to be getting bigger everyday! Thanks in advance Stu
DamirGTI 344 Posted May 16, 2008 What ever you do don't let the vacuum advance plate/magnet inside the dizzy free cos , if you don't refit the vacuum capsule back or if you don't lock the advance plate/magnet , the plate will move slightly when you press the acc. pedal harder and thus change a little bit the advance curve low down which will produce pinking/detonating ... Now for locking the vacuum advance plate/magnet first turn the plate fully anticlockwise (anticlockwise or if you prefer - to the left , when looking at the dizzy from the front side , from the dizzy cap side ) and then , well this is a bit hard to describe i'll need a picture but basically you lock the advance plate/magnet with a piece of round cooper wire , when you've rotate the advance plate to the end position fully anticlockwise remove the dizzy cap and inside the dizzy you'll see a "toothed ring" - attach the wire on one of the tooths inside the dizzy and tense the wire trough the vacuum advance capsule aperture out and attach the other end of the wire uptight around/beneath the advance capsule screw , tight the screw so that the wire can't loosen off and bob's your uncle I'll make a picture for you for the better understanding Damir
kyepan 291 Posted May 16, 2008 (edited) so pretty much what he said, you need to rotate the insides of the dizzy on their spring loaded mechanism by poking something thin gently into the hole for the advance mechanism. If i remember rightly this can also be done by taking the dizzy off and rotating one end clockwise, and the other counter clockwise. This rotates the internals and exposes the peg that the advance clips onto, you can then clip it on and let go, it should pull the vac advance onto the dizzy case. May have also marked and removed the dizzy to make this easier. Edited May 16, 2008 by kyepan
DamirGTI 344 Posted May 16, 2008 (edited) Right , i've made that like this (it's simple try it out ): tools ... you have two positions of the vacuum advance plate - plate turned fully anticlockwise (always , when looking at the dizzy from the front/dizzy cap side !) is zero vacuum advance position , note the vacuum canister attaching peg position it'll be deep down in the corner ... this is maxi vacuum advance plate position - plate turned fully clockwise , the vacuum canister attaching pin is now closer to the aperture ... now , take the screwdriver and rotate the vacuum advance plate trough the aperture fully anticlockwise to the end position as far as it goes - zero vacuum advance .. here you can see the toothed ring (red marks on the four tooths) you'll see that the toothed ring will move to the left/right on the dizzy shaft as you turn the vacuum advance plate - it'll move in the same direction ... cut a piece of 1mm copper wire and make an hook on the end .. and attach the hook on the tooth which is nearest to the vacuum capsule aperture (it'll be like this on the picture , first tooth on the right) - but do attach the hook fully down as far as it goes ! ... another look ... next , drive the other end of the wire out trough the vacuum capsule aperture ... tense the wire and attach it on the vacuum capsule screw (it doesn't need to be tensed strongly , but reasonably tight ..) Done , next try to rotate the dizzy shaft and make sure that it turns free without rubbing on the copper wire .. also if you've done everything right now you wont be able to turn the vacuum advance plate clockwise anymore (to the maxi advance position) Rgs !
