Fuel Surge Issues.....

Recommended Posts

Ho Ho - Just had a reply back from the local Plastics company we deal with in work saying they are willing to 'chop my tank' for me providing I remove all its accessories & wash it out in advance twice with hot soapy water from the initial health & safety/inflammable point of view.

They think the tank will be either Polyethylene or Polypropylene but neither should be a problem for them to weld.

In order to keep costs down I suggested I would cut the tank for them but they said they would prefer I just marked the tank and they cut it to make sure it's straight - Sounds good to me!

They reckon they can do the job for £50 (We have agreed a max in advance of £60) and I'll leave them the tank for a couple of weeks to do.

Result !!!

Got a Knockhill track night this Friday - Wish I could have it done before it but at least I know now it'll be sorted for the next one...Smaller tank, less fuel, less weight and no fuel surge !!!!!

hmm thats quite cheap. I have 2 spare tanks for my Visa so may be worth a gamble trying this for £50! Please post your results when done and tested, cheers

Anymore news on this? Am just about to try and get the plastic tank on my 106 race car cut and welded due to fuel surge issues since having bodies fitted. Bit tight for space underneath to fit an alloy tank, will need a custon design.

Has anyone tried stuffing foam into the tank to stop surge? Is there a reason why this couldn't be done?

Current status for me is I removed the tank last weekend, took off the pump & sender unit, washed it out twice with hot soapy water and then left a garden hose running in it for 20/25 mins. I then drained the water out and took it to the Plastics crew earlier this week - Hopefully I should get it back in just over a week now and I will keep updates coming of how it looks, costs and, most importantly, works for me......

After seeing foam in a Bag Petrol Tank a few years ago I wondered about the fuel foam solution too. I did a google search and found that most fuel foam is sold in squares and you would need a lot of them to work effectively. I also contacted one of the manufacturers in there that makes/supplies fuel foam to the MOD but they were not willing to sell a larger piece to just 'Joe Public'....The tank is going to have to be reasonably full of foam so as just not be useless and just slosh around in the fuel which seemed to me had the potential to be an expensive solution if having to source an unknown & potentially high number of foam squares from a motorsport supplier. I also thought it could also be pretty time consuming and involve a lot of trial & error to suss out just how much foam would be required - Could be a good potential solution though for someone willing to research/trial & error !?!?

If cutting the fuel capacity to around 30 Ltrs is not an issue then cutting/shutting the tank still seems to me the ideal, proven and weight reducing way to cure fuel surge.

can you not work out the amount of foam required by volume of the tank minus the space for the fuel pump?

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread…

Has anyone tried the tank foam option mentioned in the last couple of posts and successfully eliminated the fuel surge issues?
