mi16 vs the s16 i know theres been loads written and ive searched through stuff but heres the choice

i have a flowed head and 4 branch manifold for the mi16 so do i go with a mi16 and add these parts to it or go with the s16 as its a newer engine maybe better ??

ill probably add cams to either engine before it goes in and later maybe management if needed just wondered what people would do if they had the option

both engines have similar milage around 100k

wiring has to be re done either way as its terrible so thats not an issue with both ways

I have not had massive experience of either engine but I think the biggest difference is not the power\torque curves.

The 1.9 mi is alloy so lighter but suffers from oil surge, so I think the choice is whether you want to go for less weight which will benefit handling and performance but in doing so you will probably come up against oil surge especially if you use the car on track.

the car is fully stripped so a few kg is no worry the things are bean cans anyway

so the s16 is a better engine

The Mi16 and S16 have near identical heads, so in terms of this area of the engine, oil surge problems are identical. Down below however, the S16 is far superior, having a baffled sump, possibly a windage tray (depending on build date), better oil pump etc. Add the extra 93cc and the S16 is a clear winner.

Put your flowed Mi16 head on the S16 block. You'll need just one diesel head bolt for the one over the water pump. Use S16 head bolts for the rest.

Add your Mi16 crank to the S16 block for even more punch.

the only really probelm with the XU10's bar the 20-25 extra kgs over the XU9 block is the bores wear out and can't be honed back pretty quick, getting pistons for them seems to be a hassle aswell, on the plus side the XU9 can just have new liners dropped in (effectively)

Having had both Mi and S16 blocks in my car (on 1.9 management) I can say the weight on the nose is noticeable, but then does it matter if you can keep going and going?

I used the PTS sump baffle in my Mi and never had any oil surge issues at anglesey, coombe and a few trips to the ring aswell. maybe I can't drive properly who knows.
