Timing Light

Recommended Posts

mechsmurf

this is my story

i had coolant loss and oil burning prob and blue smoking also high idle when hot and low when cold

i removed the head fount the hasket had completey perished and was all in the liners

cleaned block and head also checked liners rebuilt and all was ok

the next week blue smoking returned and poor idle hot and cold

i decided to swap throttle body for one that i knew was set right

all ok till next day when she starts misfiring/hesitating only at bottom end

i have tried playing with the dizzy and got idle down to 1000 when warm

but runs crap

i have been given a timing light but to be honest never used one

what do i do with it

any input on any of this would be appreciated

had a look at her today found one of the head bolts has snapped for some reason letting water into spark plug hole causing the misfire

i changed the plugs and tried again

misfire has now gone and i then played with the dizzy as my idle is around 1500-2000 when warm

i retarded the ignition to 1000 rpm now runs ok (have had what i thought was tappet slap but after the retiming of the dizzy has now gone)

(am guessing it was too far advanced causing pinking)

is there any way of removing the remainder of the head bolt

or is it a new engine

The remains of the headbolt can be drilled out but its a job for a professional engineering firm not any old garage imo because it has to be done accurately so the threads can either be reused or the block helicoiled with a steel insert for extra strength.

Graham.
