DamirGTI 342 Posted May 13, 2008 (edited) Hi ! I need new bolts for ball joint to hub and also for shock to hub joints . The old bolts where 10.9 grade so i was wondering can i use 8.8 grade bolts or A2 70 stainless bolts for these two joints ? Thanks ! jackherer 543 Posted May 13, 2008 I'm pretty sure they are 8.8 as standard.
DamirGTI 342 Posted May 13, 2008 Well i've found 10.9 grade bolts on ball joint and 8.8 grade bolts on shock to hub joint so 8.8 ones will do for this purposes ? Thanks ! Damir
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted May 13, 2008 8.8 grade are high tensile and should be sufficient, 10.9 are stronger so given the choice personally I'd go for 10.9's. DO NOT use stainless they are not up to the job.
DamirGTI 342 Posted May 13, 2008 (edited) Been today to my local hardware shop and they only have 8.8 grade bolts and these stainless A2-70 , guy said that he can order 10.9 or 12.9 ones if i wish , however im a bit tight with time so me thinks that i'll be using these 8.8 bolts .. Anyway i remember when i was removing these ball joint bots in the past that they always bend a little bit from time to time (they where mostly 10.9 grade ..), dunno why they supposed to be strong right , maybe the hubs are gone oval so the bolts bend when i tight them Damir Edited May 13, 2008 by DamirGTI
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted May 13, 2008 Just make sure that the bolts you use have a sufficiently long shank (unthreaded portion) on them. Do not use a set screw (fully threaded).

jackherer 543 Posted May 13, 2008 I've just looked at a pair of brand new genuine Peugeot ball joint bolts and they are marked 8.8.

base-1 17 Posted May 14, 2008 For what it's worth, I've replaced the std Peugeot stuff with 12.9 capheads before, which I have removed/refitted quite a few times and have never bent. Worth considering when you aren't pressed for time
