austingm 0 Posted May 13, 2008 I am restoring a 1992 1.6. Had a small hole in the exhaust and took it to be fixed. The guy told me that it is all original except for the back box that has been replaced. How can I tell wether it has been replaced with an original item or not? Car runs fine but from what I've been reading, if it is not the standard Pug one it can adversly affect performance. Should there be a part number? Or maybe I can measure the size of the box and compare to an original one if someone can give me the dimensions. Cheers
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted May 13, 2008 Some after-market down pipes are made from a single pipe but the original pipes are made of two D shaped pipes welded back to back to give a tuned length system of sorts. You can see the difference by looking for pair of weld lines on the first (larger diameter) section of the down-pipe. A single tube will only have one weld line.
