barney 0 Posted May 12, 2008 Hi all, Rebuilt my car/engine and its been up and running fine but now it won't start for some reason. Can smell fuel, plugs are wet and I have a spark and static timing is good. Any ideas? Fuel pump is running. Cheers, Oli

gti-si 0 Posted May 21, 2008 (edited) Have you got a spark? Is it flooding the engine? Just noticied youve got a spark...my mistake. Probably flooding the engine then. Check the ECU temp sender is plugged in and not dud. If it's plugged in properly, try starting the engine, crank it a few times, then unplug the injectors and try again, if it runs for a few seconds, it's more than likely a knackered temp sender Edited May 21, 2008 by gti-si
Roman 0 Posted May 21, 2008 check ECU temp sensor...
barney 0 Posted June 3, 2008 Hi, where is this sensor located? Tried to start it this evening and it fired twice but didn't catch then just flooded as normal. Thanks, Barney
gti-si 0 Posted June 3, 2008 Have you tried unplugging the injectors and cranking once it's flooded? You should find it on your SAD housing. It'll have a blue plug

barney 0 Posted June 19, 2008 Hi, Tried pulling off injectors as you said and correct in ran for few seconds then stopped once out of fuel. Got new ECU Temp sensor fitted it but it won't even try and start now, even if I unplug injectors. Any ideas? Oli

Oli Replace, or at least thoroughly clean the plugs , they don't like drowning (and check you've not accidentally disturbed the wiring from dizzy, ig. amp. or coil - )
barney 0 Posted June 22, 2008 Hi, Traced all wiring back to ECU and theres no breaks in wires, going to try bridging tacho relay and see what happens, will give plugs a good clean and try again. Cheers, Oli
BusEngineer 7 Posted June 22, 2008 Only had a starting fault once, car was running fine went down to local motor factors, came out car started fine . . . made a rather spirited getaway and it cut out . . . How embarassing!!! Ha Ha. The wiring from amp to distributor has a plug in it and after 20 minutes checking for spark etc realised that had fallen apart . . the metal clip that holds it together had gone missing . . . Still haunts me to this day
barney 0 Posted June 22, 2008 Still won't start, been through loads of stuff and I can't find problem!

DamirGTI 345 Posted September 24, 2008 Try to replace the fuel pump (tachy) relay , and hook up the multimeter (set it on the buzzer) on the dizzy signal cable (the black one with yellow 3pin plug on the end) - unplug the yellow connector , remove the dizzy cap and shaft spacer (if fitted) , connect one probe inside the dizzy on one pick up coil pin/terminal and check for continuity with other probe on the 3pin yellow connector .. wiggle the cable a bit while you do so .. then do the same with the other pin/terminal (if it's fine you'll need to have unbroken current/continuity from both dizzy pick up coil pins on the yellow 3pin plug side .. but only on 2pins on the yellow connector cos one is blank/shielding wire , you can see that if you roll back the rubber boot from the other "female" 3pin black connector in which you plug this yellow one .. green and red wires are positive and negative signal from the dizzy pick up coil , third wire without insulation is an shielding wire) .. further on to inspect the dizzy pick up coil itself , remove the dizzy out from the engine , remove/unplug the black cable from the dizzy , hook up the multimeter on the dizzy pick up coil terminals and turn the dizzy shaft/arm - if it's fine you'll hear intermittent buzzer signal , the buzzer intensity will increase/decrease the faster/slower you turn the dizzy shaft/arm .. if you can't get any signal trough the multimeter then the pick up coil is buggered .. Check the ignition amp connector and wiring also as described above .. Hope this helps a bit Damir
