djinuk 2 Posted May 10, 2008 Hi during the passed few weeks my clutch pedal has felt very stiff during the last 2 inch's of putting it to the floor, i presumed the cable had become damaged and dry from heat of the manifold, so i ordered a new one and fitted today, however the problem is still there with no difference. Is it possible that my pressure plate is damaged and the clutch needs changing ?
Pob 1 Posted May 10, 2008 (edited) Hi during the passed few weeks my clutch pedal has felt very stiff during the last 2 inch's of putting it to the floor, i presumed the cable had become damaged and dry from heat of the manifold, so i ordered a new one and fitted today, however the problem is still there with no difference. Is it possible that my pressure plate is damaged and the clutch needs changing ? Did you buy Genuine or a Pattern cable? If It's Pattern it's worth spending the extra, I went through changing the clutch and pressure plate only to find it was the new pattern cable I fitted. Or it could be the bushes on the clutch fork if its a BE3. If you have a BE1 it could be the bush on the arm that the cable connects to (Bolt goes through it) Dan Edited May 10, 2008 by Pob
Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted May 10, 2008 i've never had a probem with pattern cables. QH ones normally
djinuk 2 Posted May 10, 2008 its a pattern cable, but the problem feels the exact same, and after taking the old cable off if felt free. where abouts are these bushes that you speak about, are they accessible form the outside of the gearbox ?
Guest davey Posted May 12, 2008 Gearbox off job, clutch fork is inside the housing. Dave

BuD 0 Posted May 12, 2008 I dont want to be the voice of doom but if the cable is very stiff it will fail very prematurely and leave you stranded at 2am (not that I have done this.... )
Guest davey Posted May 12, 2008 Second thoughts, if you've got a BE1, then its easy to check that the bushes on the arm are ok like Pob said. Just follow the cable down to the gear box and you'll find the arm, like an L shape with a big bolt. If you take the cable off (keep hold of the pin), you should be able to see if the arm moves ok. The other end of the pin fits onto the clutch fork; but you can't really see the business end without taking the box off (which is not too bad, even with the engine in). Don't suppose you've had a new clutch fitted recently? Only, after I fitted mine it was pretty stiff, put it down to the sprung fingers wearing in. (If anything above is wrong, I apologise, I'm working from memory!) Dave
ALEX 98 1 Cars Posted May 13, 2008 Clutches go stiff when they need replacing. usually happens with reconditioned units. Buy an LUK one from GSF. If you do it yourself the whole job will cost around £50 IIRC. Clutch kit (inc bearing) + new Gearbox oil!
