Give In The Steering.....

Recommended Posts

matty_gti

Once again with ye old 205 there is somthing that needs looking at.

Basically there is a bit of give in the steering, you can move the steering wheel a bit and the wheels dont move and while driving itll suddenly pull to the left or right and ill have to correct it. While driving straight it just feels very lose and its very light....The wishbones n bushes are fairly new and its only getting worse......

Thanks.

Rite just had a play around and found that the pass side track rod where it enters the rack knocks. It has some give in it pushing towards the bulkhead and then to the bumper but is tight pulling towards the wheel and then into the rack????...could this be my problem?. You can hear a faint knock when steering it.

If its the rod end, the play will be in the ball joint, where it bolts to the hub. When you shake the wheel (holding at 9 and 3) it will have play. If you can get someone to do this for you, you can look and confirm its the rod end.

Grabbing the balljoint will let you feel, and probably stop it while its being shaken.

I assume this is where you mean. There shouldnt be any movent along the threaded section that screw into the rack arm. If you can grab the rack arm and pull it in and out of the rack slightly, that would point to the arm itself.

Most likely its the rod end, as they eventually go on all cars.

There cheap and easy to fit. But the tracking will need doing after to be perfect.

The actual track rod end where it bolts to the hub is secure its actualy the rod that has some give in it and knocks entering the rack which is coverd by the boot. Holding the wheel at 3 and 9 i got my little brother to turn left and right and there is some give and knocking in the road wheel so i guess its time for a new rack.

not sure whether you have PAS or No PAS but sounds very much like the rack bush has gone. In the Non PAS rack it's nylon and in the PAS rack it's phosphor bronze. Basically the steering arms have a ball joint on the end where they screw into the rack. These parts can go. £16 quid ish to replace (upto around £32 from a dealer). The bush lives in the rack. To test if it's the bush turn the steering all the way to the RHS (so rack is as far out to the LHS as it can go). Grab hold of the rack through the rack boot and give it a good tug about in the front to back and up and down plane. If it's the bush you'll feel it.

A place in Tipton , West Mids (Jay Gee Engineering) did mine in my PAS rack for £20.

Saying that for £20 you'd probably get another good rack.

Don't be afraid to pull the rubber boot back over the steering arm. It's not going to piss fluid everywhere

there's only a bush in the NS of the rack, not on the offside

Phil
