austingm 0 Posted May 9, 2008 (edited) I got my GTI back last week after a complete engine rebuild which involved a new block from peugeot. The engine works fine and pulls well but i think the idling is way too high (new to these cars so dont know what the norm is) When I start the car from cold it seems to work on 3 cylinders for a couple of seconds but as soon as i give it a rev the idle goes up and settles at 1500. After the car warms up, it idles at around 2000. The mechanic told me that my SAD is not working, however untill i find a replacement I think that idling cold can be lower than 1.5k even without SAD functioning. Is there a way that I can just adjust the idling speed without screwing up any settings on the AFM.? Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted May 9, 2008 Set the idle when hot and the cold should sort itself out. 10-15 seconds of rough running from cold is not unusual but I don't know of anyone having identified a precise cause, it doesn't seem to be SAD related. I have had old engines not do it and my new engine does do it. Tried swapping AFMs from good to bad cases with no joy. Rob Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

welshpug 1,657 Posted May 9, 2008 (edited) it will only make the car run cold and extend the warm up time, hence the length of time the Idle speed remains high, best IMO to fit a thermostat but a lower temp one if you feel it's necessary. The SAD is bolted to the water housing and the bimetallic strip that opens and closes the SAD valve is affected by the heat in this housing as well as the constant 12v feed to its heating element.
