Best Way To Stop Oil Starvation

Recommended Posts

boldy205

Hi i have a 1.9l Mi16 in my 205 and am after the best way (bar a dry sump) to control the oil. The two i have been the most intersted in is the PTS sump baffle, a Constella 'copy' from Ebay (anyone ever used a Constella item?) and, of course, the PeterT Extended pump and XU10 Trapdoor sump.

The baffles are obviously just a bolt in and play, and the PeterT setup im thinking of using is just the extended pickup and XU10 sump. I have read about oil pump baffes thant bolt to the side of the 2.0l pumps, uprated pump springs ETC but i presume for track days on street legal tarck tires surely i will be ok with just the extended pump and XU10 sump?

Id appreciate it if people with the same setup as this would let me know how they got on.

Thanks

Matt

There is probably literally..50+ threads on oil surge / baffles / sumps etc.

Some people have spun sheels on the road with baffles etc. Others have tracked fine with standard tin sumps.

There is no fail safe method other than dry sump. It all depends how much you want to spend and how far you want to go.

For my road car (with the wish a track day if i ever get time!) ive got a trapdoor baffle and spacer, the higher rataed (xu10 ?) spring, and a pump baffle. I personally dont feel i need anymore than that for road or occasional mild track use.

If i start doing a lot of track id personally go for the extended pick up, extra spacer, and windage tray.

Spend a few evenings going through the mountain of threads. In short the is no real 'cure' and no right or wrong. Only peoples personal preferance.

Thanks for the quick reply Rom. I have spent hours looking through the topics, and i think that amybe there is just to many ideas!! I have been in contact with PeterT and with all these ideas its confused me a little!!

You say you run the XU10 sump and spacer,i presume you meen the ribbed strengthener plate? You also say you use a pump baffle, this is the one bolted to the side of the pump? If so, which pump do yuo use?

I suppose id really like to know if anone has used a baffle kit with the PeterT extended pickup an XU10 sump?

I use an Mi pump, with the baffle on the side. And the ribbed spacer plate.

Ive never had any problems but as i said, ive not done any track yet.

As for the baffles, the constella one doesnt look as detailed as the PTS. Id imagine the PTS would be pretty good along with the other mods. Like you say, theres so many options, and so much variation in engines. Some have better pressure than others to start with.

In my eye's the PTS style baffle is the best bet for these engine's, The trap door baffle as std does not work and in my eye's lowering the sump etc just hides a problem and increases the risk of the sump/oil pump snapping off if you hit anything like a kerb, The std sump scraps the ground so lowering it for track work is a no no.
