Worrying Electrics (rev Counter)

Recommended Posts

Casanova

My phase 1.5 XS keeps blowing number 1 fuse. I think its meant to be a 10A but I keep putting larger ones in and its melted a few 25A fuses now! It doesn't do it straight away, but they never last more than a few hundred miles. Obviously there is something wrong in this circuit... any ideas? What runs off it other than the rev counter?

I had noticed the rev counter reading a bit high, - don't know if that's relevant? I do have a spare set of instruments that I could swap in if necessary. But its a fiddle, I don't have much time, and I'd rather keep the mileage genuine if possible. Is there anything else I could try first?

Cheers

Not sure if this is applicable to yours or not, do you have the reversing lamp in the bumper or the light cluster.

If it is in the bumper then it is on the same circuit as the tacho and mine has been doing the same. Initially removed cable from back of reversing lamp but this didn't work so disconnected the reversing switch from top of gearbox and so far all is well. Now all i have to do is trace the problem between the reversing switch and fusebox, but it at least allows me to see how high i'm revving (important with no rev limiter).

Not sure what the cause may be on the other models with reversing lamp in the light cluster

^ that's spot on - i've also had one of the rear lamps shorting to the ground and blowing the fuse!

Aside from what is causing it, stop putting bigger fuses in, if it blows the fuse then there is something wrong with it, putting a bigger fuse in gives a potential risk of fire.

All rear lights including the reversing light work with the fuse blown (I've got phase 1 lights with reverse in the cluster) so they're not suspect. I've noticed the lighter socket doesn't work today (never tried to use it before so don't know if its connected or not). Top suspect is the heater fan, however... is the motor easy to get to to change?
