[car_upgrade] Check Out My New Wheels!

Recommended Posts

JamesLumley

I've been speaking with Gti6boy thoughout his new build so he's aware of the rebuild/maintenance costs!

Tis true that my power comes from an engine with injectors in the normal place, if fact Richard - who incidentally built my engine, dyno'ed it and eventually drove/setup on the road said it could have potentially more in the future by moving to the double injector setup but I'm happy with the output for now...

Mine also has the same race cams fitted which actually makes the power slightly too high up the rev range for rallying but I didn't have an extra 2k to spend on switching to billet rally cams when the build was done. It's something I might end up doing in the future but for now, I think we can get around the problem with a ratio change in the gearbox.

The only issue I have with mine is starting her up for the first time - the high compression requires a very high torque starter motor and good battery voltage (13.5v+) or the crank sensor doesn't pickup and she won't spring into life. He's got a red top battery similar to mine - so should be ok

We change the plugs often as they do get a bit coked up but I think this is more because we often have to sit at stage arrival for 20-30mins at a time and it seems to run a bit rich at low revs. Not really that big of an issue mind as I can get plugs for just over a quid each and they only take 5 mins to change..

Once running and warmed up (which doesn't mean reving the nuts off it) she will drive round the paddock in 2/3rd gear at 20mph. Out on the road it's much the same story... if you stay off-cam, she is happy to cruise around just like any other car - that's the joy of mappable fuel/ignition.

The only real difference to say a half decent std mi16 engine is that when the power comes in, rather than being a "nice shove in the back", it feels like it's about to rip out your kidneys and park you into the nearest ditch!

I see no reason why it can't be used as a weekend/odd weekday car. The maintenance/rebuild costs are there as a result of sustained high rev use (I'm talking 8-10k rpm here). Components have a relatively short shelf life at this level so provided you're sensible and don't thrash the arse off it on every journey, I can't really see why it won't do a few thousand miles between builds.

In a 99% competition environment - much as mine is, the engine requires a full rebuild after 10 events - roughly 1000 miles. (with a few jobs in between) That isn't to say that it needs doing after this time, more so because for piece of mind you don't want to be spending 4.5k +Vat for a new crank just because you didn't spend a few hundred quid on some new shells!

I spec'ed an engine for a given target horsepower and yet still to require only minor maintenance during the season. Richard built it to do this - that isn't to say it won't go pop after 3 events. (which you can't guarantee with any engine - look at F1 as a prime example) It just means that the bearings/shells/rings all have a "designed shelf life" when used at the rpm level at which my engine generally operates.

For info, a rebuild is basically - all shells/bearings/oil pump/piston rings/cam buckets followed by a dyno setup. Not cheap but you have to cost it against the smiles per mile you get over a mildly modified engine.

My new engine saw us jump from just outside the trophy positions to now fighting for class wins (which any competitor in class C will tell you is probably the most competitive clubman level in rallying - we're talking plenty of £50-70k mk2 escorts with 250-300hp) so to me it was money well spent.

I hope GTI-6 boy is very hapy with his engine, it's great to still see someone else spending some serious dosh to keep Peugeot out there fighting with the other marques. It's getting rarer to see Peugeots in competition these days as there are other ways to go faster and win competitions. I'm not knocking anyone else here - just think we should give him a bit more encouragement rather than suggesting that what he hopes to achieve is pure fantasy.

The proof....as always....will be in the final results - let see what the finished package makes...both on the r/r and on the drag strip.

are those the very same seats we've previously seen in the Dimma T16 topic?

what will be going into the Dimma then... or have you got another pair ready for it? :)

The seats wont bother me at all, and yes they came out of the dimma as when i purchased them they were going in my old white car so i am going for black seats in the dimma.

It will be finished when i can get some money as my work has cut half my hrs/wages so i am just scraping by at the mo but hopefully pick up in the new year.

Things have been a bit slow lately due to money but were getting there.

Next we made a custom gauge pod out of the center heater vents

We than had it flocked by Miles on here (thanks), then fitted our new Stack gauges (Rallye's do not have gauges!)

Well we are back on track now.

We have converted the box to a hydraulic clutch for a cleaner engine bay and easier pedal.

Fitted the rebuilt zf diff and fitted the box on to the engine.

The engine is now in th car but the bloody phone ran out of charge

Really like the clutch, what pedal/master cylinder setup did you use?

very interested in the clutch setup too as I need to run a hydraulic clutch and I can't afford a fancy pedal set

One of mine used to run a Hyd clutch and just had a cylinder mount on the bulkhead next to the pedal box and an adapted pedal to work the cyl.

What is the clutch slave cylinder from? looks like a handy mod, no more snapped clutch cable (if you don't mind me asking)
