Sounds like you have one of those silly 'Fuel Saver' things on there...

Get rid if so!!

Oh no, really?

Anyone got a picture of the proper fuel pipe set up?

This is my engine bay...

There is a canister near the brake servo, which I assume is a filter and the big tube is between that and the fuel rail, running along the top of the cam cover.

That 'canister' is indeed the Filter. Keep that

As for the thing between the filter and the fuel rail...i have no idea. But its not meant to be there. So is an add on of some sort. Maybe this is a 'fuel saver' Baz mentioned.

I cannot remember the correct name for these, or even if it is one, however it looks very similar to a tube containing lead. The idea is that when 4star was stopped being sold at 99% of petrol stations then you could use unleaed and as the fuel passed through the tube it would flow over/past lead bearing or the like releasing lead into the petrol. This may also explain why it rattles, ie the bearings inside it.

Ditch it and place the air filter by the headlight as with it there will kill BHP or stick the OE one back on.

I think the idea was to act as an additive to help reduce wear on the engine due to the removal of lead from the fuel, and stop the need to re-set the timing.

Like all those other 'miracle' devices you can get, such as magnets to 'polarise' the fuel, 10p resistors on eBay, air-bleed valves, etc, it's snake oil and complete and total crap. If that's what it is, take it off and put a standard pipe on there!

Miles, its an old pic and I have resited the air filter by the headlight.

Right, that tube is going! Blimey, the guy who had this car before me was a right plonker!

Thanks for all your advice guys.

Well, I replaced the "device" with a piece of fuel pipe and booger me if it doesn't run much better! Slower and steadier idle and it definitely seems to pull harder through the gears.

Thanks for your advice chaps.
