gerlewislewis 0 Posted May 6, 2008 I tried to start my car at lunch time, but when I turned the key all I got was a machine-gun type noise from under the dash (near the drivers door). No starter motor turning either. Anyone got any bright ideas?! I fitted a new ignition amp last week and it started fine then. Its weird how i'm not even getting starter motor? could it by tachymetric relay related? Ger
jeremy 71 Posted May 6, 2008 Have you tried checking the soleniod wire on the starter motor? Will it push start?
steve@cornwall 100 Posted May 6, 2008 Have you tried checking the soleniod wire on the starter motor? Will it push start? Sounds like a flatened battery, or loose / corroded battery terminals
gerlewislewis 0 Posted May 6, 2008 Flat battery is a possibility, as I havent done over 2 miles in 2months. Its on the trickle charger right now. I will post progress!!! Thanks for the replies Ger
GLPoomobile 958 Posted May 6, 2008 I'll 2nd a flat battery. Was it like a rapid clicking noise? That seems to happen when you just about have enough juice to power the lights etc but not enough to spin the starter. Dunno exactly what causes the clicking though. Tachy relay maybe? Rom 0 Posted May 6, 2008 Ive not had it on a 205. But in general cars often make a fast loud clicking when not enough juice to crank over. Charge her up, will probably start, or at least turn over
gerlewislewis 0 Posted May 6, 2008 ok, heres the latest: Its been trickle charging since lunch time (4 hours). I went to start it again, same problem. I turned the key with my head under the bonnet, and the machine gun noise seems to be coming from the battery area (probably starter). I can see the alternator turning very slowly too - about 2rpm. Still not starting though - I will let it charge overnight. I woulda thought it would have started by now. Any suggestions? Ger
welshpug 1,666 Posted May 6, 2008 (edited) Got dash Lights? sods law if you didn't but if you parked at the top of the hill you could see if it'll bump start, do it with 2nd to make sure it turns over fast enough. Edited May 6, 2008 by welshpug
gerlewislewis 0 Posted May 6, 2008 yes I have dash lights. I have wipers, interior lights, etc. Sadly, im at the bottom of my driveway The starter (or what im assuming to be the starter) is making a mad machinegun noise, but the engine isnt being cranked at all. also when I turn the ignition of the alarm makes a quick 'plip' noise, then the alarm light inisde the car goes to a constant off (never had that before, it usually flashes). :S
Rom 0 Posted May 6, 2008 Sounds flat battery to me still. Its possible the starter is jammed, and theres not enough torque to free it off. Rocking the car in gear or clumping the starter might free it. Do you have anything to see what voltage the battery is ? Or can you try jumping it with another car. If it was an alarm fault, it should kill the feed to the starter / fuel pump etc etc. So should either crank and not run, or not do anything. If the battery is shot..it may not ever crank, as no matter how long you charge a duff battery...its still gonna be duff. Before getting too involved, id try and get it a known good battery, either fitted of via jump cable. As you have mentioned it hasnt been used hardly. If the same, id look at stuck starter..Feeds to starter (loose, corroded etc)
gerlewislewis 0 Posted May 6, 2008 ok, well I will let it trickle charge until tomorrow. If it wont work then, I will try my golfs battery (the previous owner of the pug assures me the battery is fairly new). If even with the golf battery I get no joy I will come back here and ask for starter advice! Cheers Rom. Ger
Rom 0 Posted May 6, 2008 No probs mate. It could be a number of things. More often than not something simple thats often overlooked. The amount of times ive dived in to complex stuff trying to solve faults, only to have someone come along and point out something glaringly obvious As for batteries, there tempremental ! I work for Toyota, and we replace a fair few batteries under warranty. Ive got a Bosch Silver on mine. Which had never let me down, it ran flat as i didnt use the car for a long time, jumped fine. But now the indicator on top stays black, even after charging. Just wont go green Put our tester at work on it, only measured 500 amps (should be 680) Said duff battery. Took it to where i bought it, and there tester says its fine @ 640 amps. I dont have the reciept, and its about 14 months old. So even though it is covered, i cant prove i bought it there. So although it still starts the car, im guessing it has dropped a cell or something. And its only ever gone flat once, always been green before this. It will no doubt oneday fail me, so its getting replaced just to be safe.
gerlewislewis 0 Posted May 6, 2008 mines constantly black on the display, even after a big trickle charge, and a 20min idle on the drive. In fairness, I havent been on a trip in it yet (its un-insured and taxed until I finish the restoration on it) Ger
