Fitting A Radiator To A 205 Td

Recommended Posts

spudmurphy

Hi,

I have a 205 TD thats had a leaky rad, I managed to pick one up over the weekend and swap it but on installing the replacement I've struggled to connect the hoses. Basically the problem is that on the rad I removed the bottom coolant line and the small one that goes to the expansion tank (both on the o/s of the rad) were at 45degrees to the radiator, but on the replacement they were straight.

The expansion tank line wasnt too much of an issue as there was enough slack to make up the extra distance but the bottom pipe was a pain in the bum  There is a solid pipe that runs up the chassis leg and the coolant hose that was on it wasnt long enough to reach so I've had to bodge a bit of samco hose in, but as this is fouling on the towing eye its not ideal.

The rad was sold as being from a diesel but the seller wasnt sure if it was a turbo one or not, have I bought the wrong one or is there 2 different styles of radiator?

If I can I'd like to get a proper hose from peugeot to link the had pipe to the rad, but if I've bodged the wrong rad in htere I'm going to struggle

Thanks for any responses,

Spud

I've done it t'other way around before, having to shorten the bottom hose to fit!

Rad worked exactly the same though , so I'd just get the right hose from pug if I were in your position

It's been quite a while since I did the rad on my STDT, but IIRC the TD radiators are a good bit bigger than the standard diesel rad (Which should be identical to a GTI rad, I think.) Given that the TDs are a bit weak on HG etc if they overheat, I personally wouldn't take the risk. The downside is that new TD rads cost something between 2 and 3 times more new.

Dimensionally the 2 rads were the same when I had them lay next to each other, i'll double check the thickness of the core tonight though as I dont want to cook it! its just that the 2 pipes on the rad were at different angles that have caused me the problem.

Maybe a trip to peugeot to check the parts catalogue would sort it as if there are 2 different rads maybe there are 2 different pipes. God bless the french, they like to make things difficult

TD rads are £100, GTI+N/A Diesel rad £40 (same one), the design is very similar but with a far thicker core.

Well it looks like bad news for me, having done a quick check last night the core on the replacement rad is around 0.75 of an inch slimmer than the old one :) so looks like I have the wrong rad, DOH!

Sooooo, the question is; Is it definite death and destruction if I leave the thinner rad on, or do I need to go and get me a TD one?

Ta,

Like Brian, I certainly wouldn't risk it, a head gasket costs a lot more to do than teh extra £60 for the proper rad.

If you search around the net you can get them for just over £100 delivered, I did last year when mine holed.

Seeing how quickly the water temp rises on mine on an uphill blast with the proper rad I think it'd die very quickly if I'd used the n/a diesel /GTi one.

Graham.
