where is the MAP sensor plumbed in? it was doing all this before you plugged the MAP and Lambda in so it's sounding like a Throttle Position sensor problem.

Is there a sucking or wooshing sound that could indicate bent valves when turning over?

The top and bottom pulleys have "Dots" on them that you can use to align with the white lines on a genuine belt,Failing that the cam pulley has a hole in it and there is a hole at the rear of the cylinder head (7 or 8 o'clock approx) that it will peg into,Dont trust the crank pulley as this a two piece job on these engines and they always "spin" so I usualy use an old 8v one piece gti pulley and use that to align the bottom ,it will peg out with a drill bit at around 11 o'clock ish but if you remove the lower pulley and plastic belt cowling you can see where its supposed to locate.

If you have a haynes book of lies it the same for most the 8v XU's just the earlier alloy engines have a different tensioner assy.

does the cam pulley get pegged when the engine is at tdc?

No the pistons are all half way up the bores (i.e. all level)

so the bottom pulley, gets pegged, looks a bit of a s*it way too, its like part of the side of the bottom pulley, which lines up with like a hole in the engine , just looks a bit crap, nothing like a 1.9 gti what ive seen pics on here of....

Well its basically the same as a 1.9 gti,or an MI or Gti6 come to that, they all have a hole on the bottom pulley and a bit behind it cast into the aluminium that it then pegs into

That table is for the 6' engine,I think you'll find that the turbo TPS works the other way around,The switch may be different also,I know that they are definatley different between S16 and Turbo.

tps wont affect it running as bad as your saying.

Id suggest you compression test it now the belts on in the correct timing position and post the results.
