Cam Belt Tentioner Falls Off

Recommended Posts

stee 1FM

Hi, Guys

The other day my wife was driving the 1fm and she put the car into second and the car cut out, The aa towed it home for her.

When i got home that evening i decided to take a look at it myself, the aa guy said it might be a problem with the cam belt, after taking the cam belt cover off i found the cam belt tentioner ( outer metal ring) had fallen off.

i haven't taken any more of it apart, so i don't know if the cams/pistons ect are damaged.

So my question is

1- should i remove the head to check the signs of any damage.

2- what parts will i need to replace in total eg, cam belt, tentioner, water pump, ect

I've never done this type of job before, but willing to give it a go myself. (unless anyone fancies giving up a sunday to give me a hand  )

Cheers all Stee

Id put a new belt and tensioner on it. Turn it over by hand to see if anything hits.

I wouldnt bother taking the head off until i tried that. Assuming your goign to keep it either way, youll need the belt anyway. Better to spend an hour or so doing the belt, than taking the head off and finding its ok

The water pump is down to you really. If its not been done id do it personally, while your there its very little extra work. I dont think there safe heads though, so if something went bang, it could have bent some valves etc.

assuming his going to keep it?! why would you get rid of a 1FM with just a broken cambelt

As Rom said though, fit the tensioner kit and new belt and turn over by hand to see if it has done any damage. Then if it turns at least 2 engine revolutions try to start it, or better still do a compression test to check for bent valves.

Feel free to pm if you need further help/advice, and i pass through your area quite a bit so could always pop over to help out if theres no1 local.

Should there be bent valves, it really isnt that bad, but cross that bridge when you get there.

Well knowing how bad your engine was on the rollers i would give it a rebuild.
