Should I Run 205 Or 309 Shafts, With My Setup?

Recommended Posts

as i now have the eccentric top mounts, coilovers and adj bottom arms.

i currently have 309 gkn shafts

now would i be better fitting 205 shafts back in to get it set up or have it setup with 309 shafts?

i only fitted the 309 shafts as i fitted the 309 wishbones.

It depends how much camber etc you are running with the wishbones. You might find you actually need 306 shafts, i know i'm going to need some 306 shafts for mine.

was looking to run about 1.5 - 2.0 deg camber

what you suggest??

It more depends on the track width you run regardless of camber, as you could run whatever you want aswell as trackwidth.

Get a bit of wood that's slightly wider than the front of the car, and screw/attach to other piece at 90deg to make a ] shape then measure the wheel centre track width, if it's equal or larger than a 309 you want ot be using 309 shafts, if it's 205 width then 205 shafts.

Although you'd probabaly want to aim for 309 trackwidth or more with the adjustable set up have, also depends how much castor you want to run which you can dial in with the top mounts, then adjust camber as you want with the bottom arms.

well before i took the old 309 WB's off i measure a point to point on the car.

i then added 5mm width.

my top mounts are seup like the pic below.

with this setup something is knocking quite bad on small bumps, so i assume i have it too wide??? and causeing the shafts to knock??

Drive shaft length issues are more evident on full lock if you're getting knocking in a straightline you shoudl be hunting something else on the car doing this. ARB drop links are one for doing this, double check everything's tight, although you probably have, but safe to say 205 shafts would be too short for the set up you're currently running.

Hi,

Defo 309 shafts, aim for 2 deg neg to start with and take it from there.

At a track day you really need a digi infrared temp gauge to measuer tyre temp after each session, measure inner, mid, and outer edge temps. Look to get the temps within about 10 deg accross the tyre.

ok

will be buying a temp gauge soon

i set them up roughly the same length as the 309 arms at the moment, no driven since i did this,

would you have a rough idea how much extra lenght would give 1.5 - 2.0 ? not exact, but if i can get close it will be nice to see how it feels, as it's not booked in for a setup yet (rear not found a place yet)
