as we know, there are a few matt black 205's around now, but i don't really like

the basic/flat/dry matt black - i like the slighty glossier and darker John Deere

aka "hotrod black" sort of colour/finish.

 

but i'm thinking of a colour different to black, for instance - red.

 

don't get me wrong though, i don't want my car to end up looking like the next

faded red 205 . i was thinking something like metallic red and then finished

with matt "lacquer" / clear coat - what sort of a finish would that give? would the

colour still be deep/strong and show it's metallic properties, just without the gloss?

 

but like i said, i don't want the finish to be like of the ordinary matt black.

 

any ideas are welcome (cough*Paitguy*cough) .

Got a feeling it would look like dusty red oxide.

metallic flakes just don't seem to show up without a high gloss. why not get a couple of spraycans and test the effect on a spare panel? Thinking about it, on episodes of programmes such as american hotrod, overhauling and even "ruin my ride" the flat straight from the gun finishes look terrible sometimes, yet lacquered and polished the same job is stunning!

Steve is right it would look flat with out the gloss effect gained from spraying the lacquer on the basecoat of a red metallic basecoat. Ive just finished painting mine is misano red which is a subtle red/dark orange pearl im sure you would be better off going for a metallic basecoat colour and lacquering it.

I also have to agree with the guys above I'm afraid.

 

Even if you're going for a semi-matt or satin type finish (50-60% gloss level), then the surface will still scatter the reflected light around, so the colour will always seem a bit 'washed out' or faded. Even matt black looks grey in comparison with a gloss black. Any metallic or mica/pearl in the paint would also have a greatly diminished effect too, as they rely on light reflection to 'do their job'.

 

My only suggestion would be to try it out for yourself and see what you think. It would be easy for me to get some photo's, but they won't really help as they never show exactly what paint looks like in real life. Try painting a test panel in your chosen colour (pug Diablo Red/Rouge Lucifer [EKQ / M0KQ] would be a good start), and give it some gloss lacquer. Then sand it gently with a very fine wet&dry paper (2000 grit or finer), which will give you a reasonable approximation of what to expect.

ah so you're saying that the sanded gloss lacquer will be about the same thing as a matt lacquer?

 

what i don't get is, would it be better with non-metallic basecoat than metallic, or would it ultimately be the same thing?

 

however, i've seen pics of a matt blue Diablo (or some other Lambo) and it looked really good?

I had the same idea with sorrento green.

I started a test with a speedline rim and a brownish/silver metalflake - then a topcoat of satinclear.

 

these are the only pictures I made and they are blurry, but it does look good in real life. I can try to get a better picture if you like.

Very similar, yes. Certainly close enough for you to get an idea of how it would look. I suppose you could always find a car in the colour you like, and sand it down whilst the owner isn't looking

 

You will be able to see some of the metallic effect if you decide to go that way, but it won't be as pronounced as it would be with a full gloss finish. For that reason, it may be an idea to look for something with quite a heavy or coarse metallic in it.

ok well i'm not too bothered about the metallic effect really,

i just thought it might make the matt finish less dull and flat.

I don't know if you can get Top Gear magazine over there, but there are some pictures in this months (May) edition of Kimi Raikkonen's new toy - a custom built bike. It's painted in Ferrari Rosso red with a satin finish, and looks fantastic!

I think that would be the way to go if you decide to go for a satin finish - use quite a deep red, to avoid the pink or orange faded look

I read a feature in fast car mag a fair few years ago of a saxo Allimo or Alimo Tunning in spain had painted in a satin red mettalic. They used Du pont basecoat and a dupont satin clear coat. I loved it. And you could still see the mettalic effect. Weter that was due to the spanish sun, Im not to sure?
