Gti6 Engine Conversion , Whats Involved

Recommended Posts

djinuk

Ok , basically i have searched around these forums and found so much information on doing the gti6 conversion from a standard 1.9 8v engine, however there is so many diffrent bits of information , i was wondering if anybody would be able to give me a guidline of exactly what to expect, whats involed, and whats needed, with regards to the manifolds, engine mounts (can i reuse my 8v ones) the wiring loom and the ecu locking buisness.

Thanks

No one on this board can tell you exactly what to expect. There is no set method that works for everyone.. For instance, you may be able to drop the engine in without much clearence issue, but on other occasions you'll have to use another method to get clearance. All the information to carry out the conversion is on the forum now, theres been quite a few different topics over the last couple of months that are very usefull. I know it seems a shame there isn't a simple guide on the forum for us all to work from, I was looking for one to help me, but everything you need to know is on the forum, it just takes a while to research and find the right topics...it's one of the easiest parts of doing the conversion though, so get on it!

Just a side note, check Spiky's project thread, thats a very helpfull thread, he's shared alot of information regarding the major problems, such as the alternator and clearance

Thats cool then, i understand, just one question, is there any specialist parts that need to be purchased, plus do i have to use the gti6 manifold or is there any kind of plate to make the 8v one fit?

It's a shame there isn't a good guide for it somewhere.

I want to convert to an mi16 or gti-6 soon. It seems the mi16 is a simpler conversion but the engines are getting on and apparently they can suffer from oil surge... one went on ebay today for £220 full working. Soooo tempted.

Hahaha, i'm just sitting my exams so i've not been home. The big fat arse of a GT4....lasted all of two weeks, the clutch went in a horrific manor. *Shakes head*. The gti-6 engines in, got all the drive connected up etc, just need to connect up the water works and fuel lines then check my wiring. I'll hopefully have alot more time over summer, i can stop poncing around telling others how to do it an actually get the job done then

Djinuk, the gti-6 fanimold is, as this forum will hold testiment to, a work of art, there is absoutly no reason to use an 8v item.

Edit: Slightly off topic, but Ehtos, beware of Mi16 engines on eBay, they may be in "full working order" but unless they have a history with a recent rebuild, then it'd be backwards to drop the engine in without rebuilding. Chances are it'll be raped these days, just be weary

all the answers are on here. The main things other than the wiring are getting the alternator belt tensioned correctly. I'm using a 306 rallye setup. Master cylinder clearance. You can cut the top of the cambelt cover or space the servo with washers. The lower mount fork needs extending for exhaust clearance. You need a lower coolant pipe from a bx and a thermostat adapter off here to keep the 8v thermostat housing and top pipe. You could lower the engine for master cylinder clearance. You will need a RS2000 top mount and a few washers you will need to space the gearbox accordingly. As already said spikys topic is very good.

for the wiring you need to get the rev counter, oil pressure gauge and speedo working. For the rev counter get a loom off spiky. For the pressure gauge you need a pressure sensor fitting somewhere on the block and the speedo you will need a part from a 306 gearbox but i dont know what its called, its got an electrical out put on it for the loom and a normal speedo connector. I'll get some pictures up of the parts i have and links to the parts you need either today or tomorrow

best way to unlock the ecu is to unplug it while the car is running.

may i ask how you go about with the ignition side of things (coil etc) my is the later model 205 with coil on the inlet manifold, where would i start?

by removing the 8v stuff! pretty much the same theory whatever year the car is, just that the location of some ignition components and hence wiring varies on early cars

Dj,as welshpug says, the complete engine managment system from the 8v is useless, so remove it all (including coil, amp, ECU and the tachy relay). Everything on the GTi-6 loom is self contained. The '6 has coil packs, these are wired into the relay and only require a switched live. This switched +tive goes to pin 14 on the gti-6 relay, which is a black and red box connected to the loom, there are pictures on here. You can find the wire that goes to pin 14 on the bigger of the two gti-6 multiplug, then just join the big red switched live coming from out of the bulkhead. I have simplified that alot there. There will be around 40 wires coming out of the bulkhead or something rediculous. All the ones that go to your old relay and ECU under the dash, can be removed, leaving only the wires coming from the two brown multiplugs under the dash. This will leave you with about 10 wires. Your swtiched lives which go to pin 14 and there two others IIRC. Then your left with the sensor wires (coolant temp, oil pressure switch, oil pressure gauge, oil temp etc) and then your starter solinoid and alternator. These connect to the corresponding wires on the 306 loom. IF you search the forum, theres a very helpfull table which has the wire colours and numbers listed and to what wire they should be joined.

The sensor Pete was talking about is called a VSS (veichle speed sensor). The engine can run without it but from what I remember it leaves a flat spot right at the start of the rev range. There around £80 to get new but I got one on here for £20, just put up a wanted add. I think 306 S16's have them and a couple of citreons but im unsure whcih but check the scrappies. It just replaces the old speedo box on the gearbox, uses the same cable etc
