16v Conversion - Non Finer Points (where To Start)

Recommended Posts

Ok so the engine has been decided on for next years season:

XU7 planted into a XU9 Block to make 1800cc with Intruder Pistons

XU10J4R 16v head (if we can find one)

As i am a complete virgin when it comes to 16v i need some help as to what parts i need to source to put the engine together and as alot of people have already done this im hoping you can help me.

What will i need and where can i get it from

ie

Exhaust Manifold

Angle Plate for Manifold to fit down bulk head

Dizzy - i have no ideas, no ECU due to Carbs

Inlet Manifold - im running Twin 45 Webers

Do i need to change anything on the XU9 block to accomodate the 16v Cam Belt ie Tensioner etc etc

Head Gasket

Head Bolts

Hope you can help and thanx in advance

Simon

If you're getting a manifold anyway, I'd get one to suit. Given what you're using this for, I suspect a decent performance one would be on the cards? Why not the Maniflow, assuming they do one for the XU10 head (and again, I assume it's different to the XU9J4; I don't know)? I source mine, for an XU9J4, from Longman. Fits a treat, just needed to knock back the seam on the bulkhead as it was a little close for comfort. No need for angle plates and the like.

Can't be talked into running mappable ignition  ?

Head Gasket

Head Bolts

Get *genuine* spec gasket and bolts and you'll be fine.

Longman do sell one but if it's the one as fitted to Garry's car it's worse than std with unequal lengths which does nothing for the torque/Power, I think Peter T does one??

Mappable is the real way to go, I can get the Dizzy adaptors made up which fit on the exhaust cam but needs the RS type head for this but not cheap.

Inlet manifold from QEP as the servo take off is pre-fitted and is the Jenvy one which unless your using a Sandy one the only one that fit's

I'm guessing here but you could use the XU7 engine mount's or the older Mi16 ones but will need some slight mods to the block

Thanx for the replies

mappable ignition would definitely be the way to go and would set me up for the eventual bodies but im really stretchin the budget with the engine as it is so this isnt really an option just yet!!

Who is Peter T and how do i contact him to find out?!

Inlet Mani - So QEP do one, but is this for bodies, if so will it fit carbs too?!

Hadnt thought of engine mounts, surely as im using the XU9 block that i can keep the XU9 engine mounts, nothing changes i thought?!?!?!?

Think you;ve got the wrong end of the stick, The engine mounts on the block cannot be used as the 8v one bolt's into the head and the 16v ones bolt onto the front of the block
