jamiej 0 Posted May 1, 2008 Heya, i reacently bought a cylinder head and it appears that it has already been skimmed, i would like to skim it again as there is a bit of pitting on the head face. Does anyone know how much you can skim before you get silly amounts of det whilst runnning, and also if there is a limit, how can i tell how much has been already taken off. Is there a volume within the combustion chamber that must be maintained. Many thanks jamie
wardy18 33 1 Cars Posted May 1, 2008 you can safely take 60 thou off the head but this is from the standard height, so obviously you need to find out how much has been already skimmed and take this off the 60 thou, im not at the right computer at the moment so at lunch time ill upload a page that Damir kindly scanned in which shows the standard height and how to measure!! a 60 thou skim will take the CR to 10.8 or 10.9 you get blown away if you stand behind my race pug exhaust with a 60 thou skim!! HERMAN 33 Posted May 2, 2008 This is great info I have been wondering about if my head as been skimmed and now I can find out. Do I need a repair gasket (e.g thicker) or is it best to use a standard size gasket and make the most of the raised compresion?? I am just wondering about piston to valve clearances?? Will I need a vernier pulley to make up for the effect that a skim would have on the cam belt/ timming? Cheers Neil
projectpug 0 Posted May 2, 2008 I would use a good quality standard HG, i have been told that this engine has no issues regarding valve to piston clearance (ie non interferance engine). You wont need a vernier but if the compression is too high to get it running better you might need a recurved distributor to prevent too much DET at low revs. I would definately advise using higher octane fuel also as to prevent det as much as possible. HERMAN 33 Posted May 2, 2008 Cool I will see if I can get this thicker one sent back to the dealers and get a standard one. Cheers. Neil Sorry to interupt the thread
