NeilGTi85 5 Posted April 30, 2008 I want to get rid or do something with my sunroof. Currently it is a standard slide back system with the air lock.....and is compleatly shagged. I've seen people weld plate's etc over to replace it....but i was wondering if i could do away with all the plastic and runners on the roof get a bit of glass cut to fit and just have a glass sun roof that does not open/fixed in place. Has anyone done this before?? Also, I have seen the pop up style sunroof's, is it possible to replace mine with one of them?? I have a F plate GTI, Cheers Neil

NeilGTi85 5 Posted April 30, 2008 would weigh a fair bit, i should think!! What would?? The standard pop up system?? Surey it'll be lighter if i get rid of the current system (runner's, platic bits) and just have a piece of glass/perspex cut to size??!! Neil
BERTMAN 40 1 Cars Posted April 30, 2008 sorry, i thought you meant a full length sunroof kind of thing across the car lol!!!

RyszW 0 Posted May 1, 2008 (edited) AdamP on here bolted an alu cover over the sliding sun roof hole. See here: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?s...76939&st=90 I believe he went down this route as there are already captive nuts there for the sunroof surround / mechanism. Rysz. GLPoomobile 958 Posted May 1, 2008 For all the effort of removing the original setup and replacing it with a pop up system or a fixed piece of glass, you may just as well fix the original vacuum sunroof! You risk making the car much less desirable should you come to sell it. Buyers want either a non sunroof model or a genuine OE vacuum sunroof model. The aftermarket flip up sunroofs are just crap IMO and I wouldn't want to buy a 205 with one (my first GTI had one). If you were building a dedicated track car it would be a different kettle of fish. Then you can get away with plating it up as when you come to sell you will be marketing it to buyers looking for a track car.
NeilGTi85 5 Posted May 1, 2008 Agreed, but as im not going to be selling I want something that I want. It will be a road and track car, I want to be able to have a smooth roof line...like this: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=89910 I would much prefer to have a fixed glass pane then the pop up version but im not sure if its possible..... number2301 1 1 Cars Posted May 4, 2008 If you remove the runners it leaves a load of holes down the length of the roof doesn't it? Might cause problems.
