Mi16 Liners - Removal

Recommended Posts

smokey

Hiya guys

last night i started to rebuild my Mi16 engine...been a while waiting!!

Anyway i wanted to remove the old liners because i have 4 newer one to put in.

I read through the overhaul manual thats kicking around on here and i noticed it said that 1st you should remove are the 4 oil spray pipes.

So i did that no problems. The the next thing was to remove some liner retaining bracket. Now i don't seem to have these.

Is this something thats added and used to stop the liners from moving when you take the head off or is it something thats there all the time?

I dont have it and am wondering if it was missing off my engine.

The engine's head was off when i bought it.

Also do the liners just tap out?

Hope you can help

the liners do not have clamps that is only when thhead is taken off, haynes like to clamp liner down for some reason. If the liners are scrap then just pull them out with some mole grips, this will mark them so only do it like that if they are not being used

Haynes mention the clamps as they are used so that the bottom end isn't disturbed when doing head work, and so you can turn the crankshaft over without causing any damage, so no if you haven't fitted any you wont have to take them off :D

The reason you shouldn't disturb the liners is that the seals at the bottom usually break and leak, meaning you'd have to do a bottom end rebuild as well as just replacing the headgasket.

If you want to remove them without damaging them you need to tap them out from underneath with a block of wood or something similar that wont damage them. Be warned though theyre normally stuck in like bloody limpets, mine certainly were !

Wicked thanks for the replies guys.

Just as i thought with the retaining bracket.

These liners are to be replaced, but will try and be carefull because they might be useful to someone one day.

Thanks again

i whacked a set out once using a block of wood. Just try and hit it center if you can, or tap it on 4 different angles so it keeps moving a little each way, that way it wont get stuck!
